XP. wouldnt mind upgrading to VIsta but havent heard good things about it

Upgrade to 4 gig ram, and maybe the next level up processor (P8600 @ 2.4ghz) and you're just shy of $1920 leaving you money for shipping.

if i have windows XP from my old laptop that i got back in 2002 will i be able to use it or do i have to get a newer version of the OS or Vista?

You can use it if you have the install cds and know where the serial key is (some oem do not provide them.)
