2090 doesn't display on external monitor while booting

I have a dell 2405fpw connected to the dsub port but it won't display anything until windows has loaded. This will be a problem when I install linux and will want to see the grub menu. I couldn't find any options in the bios regarding this behavior. Is there a way to get the external monitor to display starting with post? Thanks.
