nVIDIA Drivers - Direct

Justin, or anyone else, do you know the stock clock speeds of the 9800M GTX? I downloaded the new official nVidia drivers along with the System Tools and they're being reported totally wrong. This is what they're being reported at using the nVidia Tools:
Core: 125 MHz
Memory: 199 MHz
Shader: 312 MHz

Now, I'm the one that's totally wrong, but can this be clarified? I'd like to try and overclock the video cards just so see what they can do, being SLi and in this beast of a laptop... TIA

Try GPU-Z and see if it gives you different readings.

I am using 180.84 drivers from Dox and I haven't had any problems. Thus, I haven't tried nVidia's yet. Let us know how the OCing goes.

Edit: Booooooooo... The tools in the nVidia System Tools package aren't making the clocks take hold, at least according to GPU-Z. The profiles save and such, but that's about it. Guess I gotta work on that now. =/

The drivers are working quite well. Still can't get the OC to set though. =/ Oh well... Guess I'll have to give up on that.

What you're seeing is normal. The NVidia card automatically downclocks when idle to save power and reduce heat and noise. You can turn this feature off in the NVidia control panel under the PowerMizer settings but there is no reason to do so since it automatically increases the performance instantaneously on demand.

GPU-Z simply reports the normal maximum clock speed on the first tab.

Considering how expensive mobile graphics cards are and how close they operate to the edge of their heat tolerance I strongly discourage anyone from attempting to overclock them.

I think NVidia drivers block software overclocking on these chips at the driver level.

Let us know if you figure out a workaround. Don't forget to manually set your GPU fan to high and don't let temps exceed 70C.

I was really hoping to get a gaming laptop with a ati card but at the moment there really isn't any. And the heat issues with the gtx 260 just remind me of my overheating/eventually melting down hp with the 7600.

what is with you and the 12-24 month old posts you are digging up? and yes there are plenty of ATi cards in the gaming segment now.
