Will it be safe to consistently run it at 17%? I understand that the battery life will take a hit, but what does that do to the temps?
I can not wait for mine to arrive. :D

You can choose to overclock it in increments of 3%, 5%, 10% and 15%. The highest overclock setting allowed through Turbo gear is 15%. You wouldn't have access to overclock it to 17%. We will be testing battery life today as well and will post the results later today.

Just confirmed that you cannot overclock the notebook while it's running on battery life, as the overclock option will be grayed out. You will need to be running on AC power in order to overclock. :(

That works for me. At 18.4" I don't think these will stray too far from a desk anyway. :D
It's a godsend for those of us that need to move something with desktop power between work and home though (right now I'm loading a tower into my car's trunk everyday). :p

Whoops. Yeah, I should have said 15%. Let us know how warm it runs at that clock. Thanks! :)

Hello Justin
How about QX9300 performance in this model
I'm quite interested on the OC function on the QX9300 and how well it worked with this model??
And Is there any further information about the Multiplier ?? Can we adjust it with the bios??
Furthermore~ Does it support the ddr2-800 SODIMM 4G for dual channal(8G)??

Unfortunately we don't have a used QX9300 processor laying around so we won't be able to run tests on that CPU. We will have a few in stock next week and will test it at that time. :)
There are no multiplier options in the BIOS with the Q9000 CPU. You can still overclock the CPU through the Turbo Gear software in windows. Also, in the BIOS you do have the ability to disable one display card. This may be convenient if you're looking to save battery life and not playing games. Furthermore, there is RAID support in the BIOS so you as an end user can setup the two hard drives in a raid configuration.
The memory in this notebook is "6 GB DDR2 800 MHz SDRAM (2G x3) 3 Internal SODIMM Slots." You may be able to install two 4gb modules, but we haven't tested this yet.

Additional CPU options have been added to our configuration menu :)

Hmmm... The review of the W90Vp-X1 says it gets ~13,000 stock, no OCing - so the quad loses about 1,500 3dmarks over the T9600? Too bad it's not quite as high...
However, a quad does seem like it'd go out of date a little slower. That, and once they start coming out with more quad-ready apps, the dual would seem soooo slllooowwww.....
Overall, this looks like the best laptop out there, at least for less than $2,500. I look forward to the Crysis benchmark!
EDIT: Nice timing!
The <30FPS does seem a bit disappointing - is that on stock or using Turbogear?

Oh OH!! The addition of a t9550 c2d instead of the stock quad core makes the price jump by around 400$ :(. A similar configuration in newegg (W90 VP-X1) without the blue ray player can be got for around 2200$. Any particular reason for this difference in price?

The reason the price jumps up $400 for the t9550 is because your basically just paying retail for the chip as these are not barebone machines where you would start at one point in price for processors and move up accordingly .So in essence your paying for the whole machine with the Q9000 and then paying for a separate processor as well and the fact that Xotic will warranty the product for you because of the upgrade , if there is a problem it will be handled on xotics end from what i gather, which is pretty swell .if you swapped your own into the machine you would essentially void the asus warranty . I think this was the only logical solution for people that wanted a faster processor and also to retain there warranty .
This is all speculation but the pricing is telling me this must be why it is the way it is.

Hmm.. impressive for a quad-core P7350 :P
With the QX9300, or even a Q9100 it should perform much better. Those ATI cards are VERY CPU reliant. the Q9000 is kinda like a Honda Civic vs. the QX9300 which is a Lambo. Yes, there is that drastic of a difference. Anyhow, we look forward to more Justin!
Few requests: Can you post a shot of the BIOS options? What version is the BIOS? Which driver is being supplied for the GPUs? And the GPU BIOS version as reported by GPU-z?
Can you bench DMC4, and 3dMark Vantage Performance Mode(1280x1024 and 1920.1280 Vantage)?
Hmm.. Oh, "Will it Blend?!" Kidding, but I'd be curious.
Thanks ma'an!

Justin, quick question. Does the A1 have the TV tuner option?
Justin_W@XoticPC

There is an antenna port on the back right side of the notebook, but it's covered with a rubber covering. Unfortunately there isn't an internal TV Tuner inside the notebook.

Good question. I've seen that the dual core X1's come with a yellow pack with a molded back, but I see that the graphic on the ordering options here depicts the grey G-series pack.
I hope the A1's ship soon, I'm running out of details to discuss.

I've been wondering the exact same thing - What's really weird is they only display that way if I'm logged in, otherwise they display normally.
Oh yeah, and I really wanna see some more benchmarks for games - perhaps Supreme Commander or some other CPU-intensive RTS?

Well there is plenty of differences.
I personally think that the A1 is a better deal than the X1
For a 100 bucks more (i opted to pay cash from Xotic:D) I get a Quad processor, a Blu-Ray reader and a second 320GB drive. All for 2300.....
Plus another difference is the mouse that comes with the X1 is a wireless blue-tooth. The one with the A1 is USB.:)

This question comes up a lot whether a customer can upgrade their current DDR2 system to DDR3 memory. To use DDR3 memory, your system must have both a 204-pin SODIMM slot and a chipset that supports DDR3 memory. A DDR3 SODIMM will not fit into DDR2 or DDR memory sockets. Strange that there is only a 3 and 5% OC on the Qx9300 Hopefully there is a way to get around this and get it up to 25% :). Im sure Asus is trying to play it safe but 3 and 5 is playing it to safe .

So there is NO way to OC the QX9300 past 5%? I was planning on getting the laptop cooling stand too and trying to get 10% maybe?
Yay its pretty dissapointing its only 5%. I wish Asus had less problems cooling their systems:I'm assuming that's why? I saw on Notebook review someone had oc's the 9300 to 4.0! & gotten at 3D mark of 20,000! njk!

On the 5797 you can Overclock the 9300 to 3.0. Its so disapointing the W90 supports only a minimal overclock. I'm somewhat confused since I keep reading it has a quite good cooling system. Well NBR's been wrong before! Still, I hope I can find a way around this.

Please view the picture below for reference:

Hey Powerpack! I'm hoping your right & I can OC it higher. The Turbogear thingy allows a higher OC for the 9400(think that's the processor?). I really want to get this to 3.0 since the Clevo/Sager 5797 supports that. With only a 5% OC it kinda seems like I'd be losing a lot of the processors potential?

Here are a few quick benchies from my A1.
Unfortunately, I had power saving mode on when I ran Vantage. 1.3Ghz. Doh! >.<
So... now we know how well it runs under that. :p
The 3DMark06 scores were run after Vantage with the Processor OC'd by 15% through TurboGear.
I'll try to do some slightly more serious benchmarks later with the CPU and cards at full tilt.

Gothic how about CPU-Z and GPU-Z shots.
Why is wPrime saying 1600Mhz?
Some good free monitoring apps. Core temp should give 4 core temps and TJ, GPU and HDD. Run orthos for 10 minutes and lets see temps? I also use Notebook Hardware Control for monitoring.
Does the turbo adjust the FSB?
Also the easist ATI OC tool i've used. AMD GPU Clock Utility. 14,000 should be your 3DMark goal I don't think hard to get to?
NBR got 13,641 with CPU at 2.8Ghz, my guess is that is a CPU score of 2,600 when OC at 3.2Ghz 15,628. Your CPU score of 3300. I don't see even the NBR OC getting a better CPU score than you? So I see 16,000 in your future. Then if you OC GPU? I OC my GPU and get about 25% greater 3DMark for you17,000 should be doable.
@Jon I don't see 3Ghz as possible. Maybe I misunderstand. Also if your dilemma is the A1 or NP5797? That is a hard one. At this time I think NP with faster Dual Core might out do A1 in some games. And like $300 less.

That 3DMark is probably pretty accurate with no OC.

Thw Windows Experience Index will read how much memory is available. You will be able to get a better score if you close down anything that may be running in the background. It should be able to post 5.9's across the board with stock settings (that's what mine did).

Try it without AA as that is a resource hog. With this resolution and screen size you may find that it won't be needed. Also try running it in DX9 mode as the DX10 drivers for our vidcards are out of date (I've heard the only visual difference is the sunshafts).

So I am looking at the W90 with the QX9300 and I am wondering whether it is really any better then a Sager 5797. I am wondering what the fuss is about the GTX 280M. It cannot out perform the ATI HD 4870x2 can it? I'm really stuck on whether I want to fork out $3,600 for a top of the line W90 or shell out 4k for the NP5797 with all of the goodies like the QX9300, GTX 280M, 8 GB DDR3, 4GB Turbo memory and a blu ray drive. Anyone have any suggestions? If you had 4k would you get the fully loaded W90 or the fully loaded NP5797?
Hey Bluedude! I got the W90 with the 9300 & dual ssd drives. If your drawn to the Clevo maybe you should wait for the 9800NU. You can then have the option of 280's in sli & I think 3 drives? I think 2 4870's beat a 280m. Once theres benchmarks for 280 in sli then you can compare with crossfire 4870(its all speculation now). One thing to consider is the Asus only allows(with the turbogear software) for a 5% OC(Im going to try other programs for a higher OC). Asus isn't the best with heating issues & CLevo are quite excellent. Also, if your wait for the 9800(I think the same price points as the Asus) you get a cool looking (though fingerprint prone) machine:the first sexy Clevo! To make a long story short I think its a tossup(at least for me) between the Asus & the 5797. If i had more patience (I dont lol ) I'd get the 9800NU. For 4K you can spec it out nicely.

I don't know if it will beat 4870X2 since the GTX 280M is just 9800GTX renamed , and 4870X2 is an actual 4870 X2 ( they are two different generation of cards ).

I know that is only personal preference on my part so not like I can give you good reasons. I prefer the slightly smaller NP5797. I would point out that the NP9262 is actually more head to head with the Asus?
The 280 is between a single 4870 and 4870x2. On games that don't make use of CrossFire the 280 will outperform the 4870x2. In games that do support CF it will depend on how well. On some it will little better on others could be a nice boost. Regardless of 3DMark scores in real games Nvidia seems to have advantages over ATI.
At this point I am not sure if I am sold on Quads in notebooks. I have trouble giving up clocks and multi threaded beyond two threads is still being developed. I do not like the Q's 45w TDP and X's 44w TDP. I think The T9800 2.93Ghz 35w TDP is good so is the P9600 2.66Ghz 25w TDP and T9550 2.66Ghz 35w TDP.
Lets take a look at the Q9000 2Ghz TDP 45w vs T9800 2.93Ghz TDP 35w. TDP is not the maximum heat output. Regardless of what MFG say there will be heat issues running Q's all out. Q9300 all out has 8Ghz computational power the T9800 5.86Ghz raw power. To get the benefit of 8Ghz you are going to go beyond the TDP. You can even see the Quads TDP is fudged to count on not using all cores even the same way as the Duals. You see if you put 2 Pxxxx together you would have 50w TDP not 45w? Simply put there is not the headroom on the Quads to run all out prolonged there is on the duals.
If I have confused anyone I am not saying Quads will overheat. I am not saying that. I am saying that TDP on both Dual and Quads is not a measure of the maximum heat output. It is a formula that for Intel they determine the criteria (AMD sets their own) to try and come up with thermal cooling capabilities required under real world use. Both in theory can out do their TDP but the dual especially in a system designed to also have Quads has much more headroom so interestingly possibly could run with the same raw power without going beyond the heat envelope which I say Quads will if using all their raw power. Remember desktop guys use water cooling and phase changing and more. Notebooks don't have those options.
Wiki has a good article on TDP and what it is and is not.

A question I have here is that if the laptop is already coming with the t9600 in it and we then have to pay for a completely new cpu why cant I just have the 9600? I dont video encode or use any applications which use 4 cores. Since I trade lappies every two years I feel fine with sticking with a duo core for the next go around. When you consider that the X-1 has a higher 3dmark than the exotic version with the 9300 and SSDs you can see where my thought process is heading. The other two horses in the race are the two sagers. I have had several sagers and like them but am drawn to the bigger screen on the ASUS.

The answer to your question is "YES and NO"
The Asus OC at 5% only if you upgrade the CPU to the QX9300
If you keep the Q9000, it can go to 15%. I think it is a limit placed by Asus to prevent overheating.

Sorry been away from the thread the last few days. We have used a combination of SETFSB and the max 5% OC in Turbo Gear with the QX9300. We had it just over 3.2GHz and couldn't get much more out of it. With the stock Video Drivers and Bios were at just over 17K in 3D Mark 06. We are going to keep trying some other ideas from E-Wrecked and see if we can keep pushing the score. :)

I think there is a lot of leeway in defining "the best"
(I believe, from extensive reading) although the Asus will have more gaming power because of the Crossfire 4870, that does not mean its the best, although people will praise the 4870 for its higher performance I dont think that the difference is that great (what is a couple fps anyway :p unless its like 10 fps at the lower spectrum in which case you would be turning down graphics anyway)
I read there were a lot of problems with the W90 but perhaps most have been resolved already.
But for me, there are a lot of other considerations to account for. Like build quality, mobility (17" vs 18.4") with weights as well, upgradebility, warranties, lifespan, etc... Y
My personal opinion is this: the W90 is powerful, very powerful but for the portability and weight it offers you, rather get a desktop whereas the 9262 has a lot more potential as a laptop
Dont flame me, I said its an opinion :wideeyed:

Well, there is no doubt that the W90 is powerful, very powerful.
I have read that the W90 isnt living up to the expections of breaking the 20k barrier in 3dMark06 and that hasnt happened yet.
I have heard the contrary of heat issues, the W90 runs very cool hence the incredible overclock people are achieving and it is still running cool for the people.
I have first hand experience with Asus, albeit an older model, it is a solid machine but it isnt really living up to my expectations similarly like many users from different forums. I havent heard of any serious issues with Sager but is an incredible machine. Based on that I would suggest a Sager for its build quality but its all personal preference, its up to you. But I suggest you get opinions from other people with first hand experience with sager as I have an illusion of sager since I just ordered one :eeek2: I am quite prejedice because of that.
But my opinion still stands, but if you just want a gaming machine not to carry about, I do suggest a desktop but I know the pressure. I also like to game in front of the tele :p
the other users of this forum would probably be more biased than me as a bunch of them arent shopping for it and their opinions will be more objective

With that being said, 2 GPU's from nVidia = 15,000 3DMarks.
4 GPU's from ATi = 3,000 less than above. With NO overclocking.
Granted, I do have a Q9650. However, I have 4 GB of ram vs. 6.
Other than that, system specs are the same.
Sager > Asus laptops.
nVidia > ATi laptop GPU's. (4870X2 Desktop GPU rocks the house on performance and bang for buck)
Just IMHO.
Im all about the numbers. And these numbers aren't impressive with 4 ATi GPU's.

There's 2 radeon gpu's not 4. ATI has a confusing numbering system:well, same for Nvidia!lol It's not quad crossfire(2x 4870x2) tho the confusing descriptions make it seem that way. Its 2 radion mobility 4870's. Would be cool if a laptop could fit 2 dual graphic cards!

The review does say 4870X2, which, if like the desktop 4870X2, has 2 GPU cores on it. So unless the laptop version of the 4870X2 has only one core on it, then two 4870X2's would be 4 GPU's, effectively...confirm/deny?

Hey Mosaic! I could be confused(maybe somebody can correct me?)! My understanding tho is the mobility radeon 4970 is'nt a dual graphics card like the destop version:so regular not quad crossfire. I looked again on the Ati/AMD site & think i right? Well, maybe somebody is positve?

The Asus W90 has two single Mobility 4870 cards connected in Crossfire. Due to drivers, it's read as a single 4870x2, so it's really two GPUs, not four.

You can choose to overclock it in increments of 3%, 5%, 10% and 15%. The highest overclock setting allowed through Turbo gear is 15%. You wouldn't have access to overclock it to 17%. We will be testing battery life today as well and will post the results later today.
Hi guys, i have a question: Have you guys ever used the IZ3D. Drivers and glasses for 3D games? Using this laptop or this w90 is not powerfull enouth? Im still waiting for shipping!

for 3d modeling i believe your probbably better off with the i7 (np9280)
for games youll have a step up higher with the 9850...
But theirs always more to consider other than performance

the W90 have lot of issue with the graphic card . A lot of people have RMA there system for lot of time. I will not suggest you go for it unless you want to have 1000 problem with it. Start reading here (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=354885) until the last page. Majority 95% of people who buy it have experience problem on that forum.

I have tried to search but i only got more confused:)I don't know I wish I did. I had no luck with OC on all the standard ones. Then I found AMD GPU Clock Tool. It works great for me. But from others not so great. People are having issues OC'ing many. I wish I had better info.;)

Thank you for the reply regardless, looks like it might work with AMD GPU Clock Tool.
