A bit of a update:

The new Sager NP9280 is ready to ship early next week with the Intel Core i7 920. We understand that many of you have ordered with the Intel Core i7 940 & Core i7 965 XE. Sager is planning to support future Intel® Core™ i7 processors in LGA-1366 package that will be released soon. Sager thinks the new SKU’s will be a better value to customers that have ordered with Core i7 940 & Core i7 965 XE. Sager plans to hold customer shipments of the Core i7 940 & Core i7 965 XE and ship these orders with future Intel® Core™ i7 processors in LGA-1366 package at no extra cost to the customers.

Hmm, a delay for a new processor? That's a bit vague. I'm waiting on my 9280 with a 965. Could we get some more information? What does 'soon' mean? A week, a month, three months? And what does this new processor offer? Did they drop the Nehalem core already? If you could shed any more light on this new turn of events Justin, I'm sure those anxiously waiting for their new systems would greatly appreciate it.

LaZZer
05-22-2009, 03:15 PM
Good find shadow. That has to be the new processor. If 965s are going to the bloomfield 975 then I'm sure it will be worth the wait. Word on the street is the 975 clocks in at 3.33ghz.

Seems the 975 is looking at a June release. D0 stepping sounds nice if we have the option to overclock.

fallenxlionheart
05-22-2009, 03:30 PM

fallenxlionheart

LaZZer
05-22-2009, 03:48 PM
Sorry fallenxlionheart, by June I mean early June. Like first week. I would imagine the delay to be a week at the most. A few vendors have the processor listed with a May 31 ship date.

"A few vendors have the processor listed with a May 31 ship date."
Does that mean its confirmed that that is the change of processor?

LaZZer
05-22-2009, 04:02 PM
I mean you can buy the CPU from a few sites online for a desktop. If you Google for i7 975 and click shopping you will find a list. Most of them claim the processor will ship by end of May.

fallenxlionheart
05-22-2009, 04:03 PM

shadow
05-22-2009, 04:30 PM
basically you will get it at the same time you would have without an upgrade.the 9280 wasn't supposed to ship until late may anyway. so when you figure that Sager ships to Xotic they do their build thing then they op check the system and do any burn-ins it would be the first week of June or so anyways.

So what about us who just ordered it with the initial i7 920 in it, are we gonna be able to get a upgrade and do we have to wait longer or we gonna get them sooner, and as far as waiting i have a eta of May 31 anyway so early next week shipping sounds right on track to me!

And yes Star Trek was sweet, the previews were good, but the movie was better.

You'll just be put on a waiting list like the others who ordered the 9280. I would assume that when we get the notification of our orders being processed.

@Lv2game

The new Sager NP9280 is ready to ship early next week with the Intel Core i7 920.

So I think 920 owners will have it shipped whatever day they were planned to be shipped, before the other 2.

lv2game
05-23-2009, 09:13 PM
Well i quess my question is, Will the 920 be able to be upgraded to a new processor since the 940 and 965 are being upgraded to LGA-1366 for future i7 processors? Is the 920 stuck with no options?

shadow
05-23-2009, 10:13 PM
they way i read the post from Justin was the 920 guys may be stuck. When i asked directly about the upcoming updates he said he couldn't comment due to non-disclosure agreement which means we don't know for sure what if any update there will be for sure. i hope it's the 975 but who knows for sure

id be kinda pissed if they upgrade an screw anyone that ordered the 920.
and if they do pull some crap like that, then more than likely ill pull my order, im on board for full upgrade not stuck with one processor cause some fool decided to get a bug up their ass and upgrade everything but that.. but we will see, i hate jumping to conclusions about as much as i like waiting.

unfortunatly that's the nature of the computer world. the newest item is obsolete by the time it ships

Xixecel
05-23-2009, 11:01 PM
if they can change the specs for the 940 an 965 then they can change it for the 920, its not rocket science, i couldnt care less about the 975, i just want to still be able to upgrade to the 965, if they mess that up then yes that does change everything, im not blaming xotic but it changes my intial perspective if that happens, and therefore changes the product. i didnt go with the 920 cause i wanted to, i went with it due to my budget atm, therefore the reasons to upgrade later when i can just buy the processor.

-Xixecel

shadow
05-23-2009, 11:05 PM

As the main theoretical benefit was reduced power draw insofar as hitting the Turbo Memory uses less power than hitting the HDD?

Very clear problem with Intel defining what is the benefit? Sold as a performance boost but still couched as a power saving option? Can't offer both. All but Intel know this. It is so bad as a boost of performance will never be offered on desktops.

I have not followed but to say you wish you got the OCZ 17"? I thought the production and ownership of that model has been a roller coaster. I do see sold here but I think even bigger issues? As said I don't know but do not think you made the wrong choice for so many reasons. ;)

well because i ordered my 9280 like may 1, right after the link for the pre order is up and available. and then a few days ago shipping is delayed because of the cpu upgrade from 965 to 975, if i`m not mistaken. if i ordered the ocz for sure i got it already. and just saw on some website that the ocz gets like 15k on 3dmark06 while the 9280 just gets like 10k - 13k. oh well, i don`t play that much anyway. and 3.2ghz is still better than 2.53ghz.

It's nice to get more out of something for less money though. I just had the extra dough on hand or i would be doing the same thing as you...But, I'm sure someone will figure out a way to overclock the 970's in the future. Then i will be doing the same thing.;)

Smart man.

Laptops have enough trouble keeping cool due to being so cramped on space there's barely any room for airflow.

Give it another 5-10 years though, and I bet laptop technology will have liquid cooled systems that keep things at or near room temp.

This of course is dependant on battery tech advancing strongly as well. :)

with a very good cooler you probably could overclock a 9280 with no problems due to all the vents on the bottom but why? regardless of it's power it's still a laptop and will never be able to stand to a desktop. but the speed increase of an overclocked laptop wouldn't be enought to justify burning anything up.

OC away! Watch temps that is it. I mean come on? All that matters.

I will tell you with a fsb OC RAM is what will limit you.

I just tend to be more cautious on laptops because the possible money that could be lost.

Laptops usually cost sooo much more to repair than a desktop PC, so I take no risks with them.

My desktop PC though? OC'd to death, but also cooled VERY well. ;)

I would also think if you could keep the temps justifyable then you could OC the thing, but like everyone else is sayin i dont wanna fry it, ill wait for the brave soul to try it an post about it to see the results, better safe than sorry is a good saying im guessin.

The np9280 is a sweet idea, but i wonder if getting it barebones with just memory and video card may be the best way to go. Purchasing a proc separately would allow you to be guaranteed a i7 920 with the D0 stepping allowing better oc or running stock speed at lower volts which would be my preference. Also, with multi-layer cell SSDs getting much better. You can now get the low power consuming RiDATA Ultra-S Plus drives and put them in a RAID 0 to get 128GB of system and application storage for around $350 which seems much more reasonable then a single Intel X single-layer cell drive and would still be fast in both read and, more importantly, write. A 2.5" 320GB 7200RPM 16MB cache can be used for any other storage and ordering a Seagate Momentus guarantees you lower power consumption than a WD.

I guess I just wish the SSD choices weren't just ultra high-end SLC drives. any suggestions as to what I should do would be greatly appreciated. I can't make up my mind.

Those "high end" SSD'd are about the only ones worth the money is the thing. Intel makes the best SSD's going at the moment as far as speed and durability, hence the high price.

Other drives have issues ranging from causing the OS to stutter or lag during writes or reads and slowing down drastically over time.

This is my (and Powerpack's) favorite read on SSD's, you may want to give it a read before shelling out the money and then regretting it.

http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3531

You're on the right track as far as putting the OS on the SSD and all data and temp files on a normal HD, that helps keep the number of writes to the SSD down and helps it last longer.

BK is correct the best overall on technical. Another very good is this (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=208242). And would of been better for completely different reasons. It is more of a comparative analysis. Anandtech is more fundamental. Sadly Les and NBR are not on the same page and not updated since 01/09. Les if you see this! Hi!

SSD's are the future but understanding them is very important in my opinion.

Finding i7 920s with the D0 stepping is pretty easy. They're on ebay brand new and the go for the same price as a 920 anywhere else, about $290.

As far as finding a barebones 9280 I haven't seen any anywhere, but had thought about seeing if I could order from xotic and just not have a proc or HDDs. I had asked Justin about being able to do that on the Sager 8662 and he said he'd be able to, but I'm not sure about this model.

The main reason I want to have the specific components are mainly for power conservation and battery life. I definitely would love having two of those Intel SLC SSDs, but the cost would put me way over budget and there aren't any MLC drives available for purchase with the 9280.

I appreciate the help greatly though. Thanks.

One other quick thing that I had read. It seems as though if you stripe two SSDs the stutter problem seen on MLC drives can be minimized because the writes are split to both drives. I have yet to see this in practice, but would offer the ability to keep all OS files including temp files on the SSDs with out using the HDD which would be convenient if nothing else.

Thanks for all the input guys.

You may not see stutter, but the constant writes will still be killing off the drives and degrading performance in general over time.

For an SSD you want to write to it as little as possible.

Okay for the fun part, (maybe not) I don't have any background on doing OC but I checked the BIOS, NO OC options. I checked every option that you can change, nothing cpu related, if I'm not mistaken its the boot options. I'll check again but I'm pretty sure no OC options. Maybe thru some other way but not BIOS. Oh well, I just want the processing power anyway. Blu ray is perfect, just lagged on me the first time, (maybe its just unlucky me) but now it works great!! camera is great too. super clear screen. my wei kinda sucks though but its not because of the cpu or the ram, its the disk data transfer (320gb 7200 rpm). sound is great, really loud!! i have it on 50%. I wouldn't doubt if the 'all powerful' doesn't start having cooling problems...Quads run on the warm side and with 2 280m GTX's, sounds like a recipe for thermal meltdown(just my opinion of course).:eeek2:

I seen on another site that alienware seems to market things too quick without putting much time into R.D.... Unlike Sager

On the other hand if everything goes good in the cooling department, then it will be one hell of a machine(Just my opinion of course):notworthy

has anyone looked at Alienwares All powerful? it is a sweet looking laptop. if you did look did you notice the web site and the sites customization section. it looks very similar to Dells. i guess Dells absorbtion of Alien ware is complete. they now use the same site and if you look closely the XPS is dead. but the All powerfull has many of the same chasis elements. it's a sad state of affairs.

How do I improve my DDTR? Or, is that the max with (3) 320gb 7200 rpm HDs in Raid 5?

that's the price of Raid5 security

KY_BULLET

If that is the best raid 5 can do then it will be getting shipped back to sager to have it removed unless i can figure it out myself.

I can't believe it would hurt performance that much...Must be something wrong.

My little toshiba laptop with 160 gb gets 4.9 on DDTR in vista score.:eeek2:

raid fault tolerance is bit of overkill for a notebook, imo. that's what backup is for.
i like raid0, i have raid10 on my production server. i wouldn't use 5 or 1 except on a system disk that has very few writes.

i think the raid is a switch on the motherboard. thec support can probably talk you thru it on the phone.

As far as i know mine hasen't been shipped yet.

I emailed PCTorque(thats where i bought it, just didn't know about Xotic or i would have went there)and asked them to remove it and set up raid 0 if this is the fallback to raid 5. Unless, they have a solution to the problem. If it has shipped then it will go back if this is the outcome.

I would rather back it up periodically rather than having it shuttering and stuttering on every game you try to play

How's the fan noise? ^^

i agree fan noise? what fan noise? My NZXT Cyro LX laptop cooler is louder than the laptop and the 3 120mm fans in the cooler are not that loud at all. infact they are barely noticable.

I am going to call them on Monday and have them walk me through switching to Raid 0. I'll let you know what I find out.

After the Volume initialization process finished. I ran a new performance test and my data transfer rate is now 5.6, it probably didn't help that I was playing WoW at the same time. btw, I am getting between 45 and 50 fps in wow.

thanks

They suck air in, and it blows out the back. Nice little space heater.

I have a board the size of the bottom of the laptop that I place on my lap, then I place the laptop on top of that to allow the laptop to breath. I am afraid without the board, I may block these fans and cause overheating.

I love the machine, I installed windows 7, and I am playing Crysis on full and it runs great.

I have installed Windows 7 on my 9280, and there is one device that is unknown in the device manager. I assume this device is the bluetooth adapter since it is the only thing that doesnt show up.

I am unable to find any information on the manufacture/model of the bluetooth device, nor am I able to find drivers for it on the drivers cd. If you have an NP9280 with Vista on it factory installed, could you please go in to device manager and post a reply to this message letting me know who the manufacture of the bluetooth card is and a model if possible.

I would really apreciate it.

I'm running Win7 on an NP8662, but I also had an unknown device show up. It wasn't the bluetooth - that has to be turned on (try [Fn] + [F12]), and windows will likely install it just fine. It's probably the SD card reader Sager uses, which is on the disc under "creader" for the 8662.

Hope this helps.

Hi folks, I should be receiving my 9280 tomorrow, and will soon be bringing it to the deserts of the Middle East. I've read that some guys have done this already and have had few, if any, problems. However, with that said, since I will be 'stuck' there for at least a year, I'm wondering if there's a way to rig up some sort of ghetto-rugged system to keep the dust out. I'm not so much worried about the heat, as I'm bringing a cooler with me and opted for an SSD drive (rugged, cool-running, oh yeah and fast!). But everyone I've talked to that's spent time there say the dust, even in 'clean' buildings which I expect to be in mostly, is insane and gets into everything. I've heard horror stories of fried electronics, including laptops because of the dust, and I really don't think compressed air cans for routine cleaning will be available.

So... First I'd like to find an adhesive keyboard cover like you find on rugged or semi-rugged systems. I've just never shopped for these before, and I want something specific to the 9280 if possible. I'm assuming the keyboard layout is similar to other Clevo designs so there's gotta be something out there, right?

Second, I'm wondering if there's a foam filter system that can be developed that will act sorta like a cigarrette butt for my intake fans on the bottom. Just enough to collect the dust but STILL allow enough airflow to keep everything cool. I really have no problem duct taping something to the lappy as a temporary fix while I'm over there (hence my 'ghetto' analogy).

Any ideas? Anything I'm missing?

Ok, for the tap to click. You should have a touchpad application installed. You should be able to go in to the touchpad app and turn off the tap to click.

I have the 920 cpu, and at idle the 4 cores run around 50 to 55C. on full load the cpu gets to around 71C.

So especially when drive gets closer to full. Unlike a HDD which can say just write the changes the SSD must rewrite the entire block. I am not an expert in video encoding but slower writes on SSD's because of this does cause me some concern. A RAID0 could easily out perform a SSD in write heavy tasks.

W7 is supposed to have a feature called "trim" that should reduce this fundamental structural/physical issue SSD's have. I have concern as to whether even "trim" can compensate for large data situations.

New tech is great but it is also a bastard. Good luck.;):)

Well i paid on line(not through XOITCPC:() with my Bank Card...i live in Kentucky, i'm just here for work...And, i'm going home this weekend.

Everything went through fine. Now shipping it to China would have been another question(duty taxes, shipping charges which would have put me way over my spending limit)...That might not have been an option. I don't know, i didn't ask:confused:

mine was ordered June 6th, suppose to get it by the 29th of June.
not as bad as some people i have heard have been waiting almost twice as long like yourself but I think the folks who ordered this model are the type with no patience and short little spans of attention.:wink2: like myself

its hard to keep faith when ive spent over 2k on a compuer that i ordered over a month ago... odd that i ordered mine much earlier than zedmec but he is likely to recieve his b4 i do...since i havent got much word on the status of my order after xotic recieved its replacement units....i assume its being built now...but who knows

I ordered mine on May 6th and with the custom skinning I got it just last night. Having said this it's an awesome machine. Worth the wait and fast as all hell. Keep the faith it does take time but it was worth it for sure. Just remember to update the power DVD software before you try to play any blueray DVD's or it won't play them. The unit is perfect !!

I talked to the nice folks here today and still no answer as to what the delay is...honestly, this is very discouraging... I ordered june 3rd and was supposed to know two weeks ago, then last week...then last friday...then yesterday and today, they told me on the phone they have no idea when the 9280s are coming... deciding what to do..cancel the order? Out of principal I am tempted... I do need a machine and can not wait another few weeks of uncertaintity...I want to give XoticPc my business... but is Sager a company that provides no communication to their vendors?

well IMO sager is also waiting for clevo's response, thats why xotic can't give you guys an answer right now about your order status. when i bought mine i waited for like.. 32 - 34 days before i got mine. i know how it feels. its hard to wait. wanna buy my machine... nah! =P maybe clevo is having some hard times filling up all the orders for d900f, plus they have the new m980nu. all i can say is xoticpc will ship it to you asap once they get their shipment of d900f.

20 days and still waiting! Question for all 9280's owner. I ordered my Sager 9280 on June 3. On June 4, I was sent an e-mail stating the following:

Sager has sold out the first shipment of this model, and the next shipment is expected to arrive in approximately 7 business days. We apologize for the delay, and we thank you for your patience and understanding that this is a newly available/released model. Once the model is available in stock and ready for production, we will send you an order status update/payment confirmation.

Today is June 23, which is obviously more than the 7 business days stated. I am still waiting for the parts. Is anyone else having to wait this long for something that shouldn't take this long to get. Or is this normal. I doubt it very much ! !

All Sager 9280 orders that haven't shipped as of today, have been emailed with a status update. If you didn't receive an email update feel free to email myself or service@xoticpc.com. :)

Really? Why'd you order through Sager directly instead of Xotic PC? You won't receive the notebook any quicker by ordering directly from Sager, plus you receive less service and support from Sager. Whereas Xotic PC provides you 2 years additional labor, 24/7 domestic telephone tech support, and cheaper pricing with better service.

honestly didn't know about you guys till I really started digging for any info on the laptop and I was sooo pissed after being really jerked around by dell I canceled my order and placed the Sager order probably a little too quick in retrospec but I wanted a new machine soo bad been down too long with a burnt up asus g1s that only boots in safe mode (gpu fried for higher graphics) still have weird colors and artifacts but anyway. the next machine will be from xotic, i mean a seller that actually participates in forums like i have seen you guys and jeez it's like amazing, great stuff and PEOPLE.

Thanks to the both of you for your kind words! Keep in mind I'm not the only Justin at Xotic PC, so i can't take all the credit. There's a pretty funny thread here (http://www.xoticpcforums.com/showthread.php?t=4199) about us Justin's!
