Ok, here I am asking about a game. Hey, I have always mentioned that I am not up on the latest games and only a casual gamer at best. I also don't play on-line anymore because I keep getting killed before I am even done logging in!:-/
I know that a few folks here play WoW. Anyway, I have a friend who plays WoW often (I'm having trouble picturing her as a gamer, oh well). She wants me to try it so we can play together. She is going to help me create a character and such. I know I can try for free and I don't mind purchasing the game if I like it even if I won't play it often. My question is that she told me there is a registration fee of $20 and a monthly fee of about $13 to play. Is that true?
If so, is there any way around that? I don't have the disposable income to pay a monthly fee for a game I might play for an hour or so once a month provided I don't get killed before I even start every time.
I didn't know there were monthly fees for some of these games! That's a ripoff in my book.

I play stuff like MoH and CoD and golf by myself after having tried on-line. I got to the point of just putting it in "god-mode" and running around trying to do silly things sometimes. (Except the golf game - there is no "god-mode", but I enjoy it anyway).:-/

Sorry Justins, she has a new MacbookPro. (She's a Graphic Arts major). I wish she had an Xotic machine, she probably try to match my lid graphics, but she can't I protected it. She can do a far better job than me on her own anyway. (All I did was use my camera and the internet, she can go from scratch and have a detailed design completely done in a couple of hours). We do have matching sleeves though.:D:-/ Well, "she's a good kid".

Well, I don't play WoW (I chose to stay true to fantacy:I play Lord of the Rings Online) but I know the monthly fee is correct. I never heard of the $20 registation fee, though I guess buying the game for approx $20 would count.

There arn't really any ways around it for WoW. you could find a free WoW clone (I believe a pretty good one is supposed to be out late this year) or you could play on a private server. (I used to do this before LoTRO came out, Its not as much fun as the public servers with 10,000 people on. Its really hard to raid when only 500 people are in the entire world) these private servers can be modded or true to the public servers.

There are other games that offer free subscriptions, notably anarchy online and runescape. but for most free mmorpg you get what you pay for.

Another reason I chose LoTRO was they had a $200 lifetime subscription when I purchased it, and I had some disposable income at the time. I like the idea of lifetime subscription because I don't feel like I have to get my moneies worth each month.

anywho, hope that helps :)

Thanks for the info Robamb.
$13 per month seems a bit steep to me. I may wait for the clone, but I wonder if my friend and I will be able to play together if I'm on the clone and she is on the "pay to play". (At the core, I think it's really about doing more stuff together and less about the game).

From your discription it sounds like just a text or chat based game and not a first person sort of thing and nothing to watch or anything or do I have that wrong?

(One would think I live in a cave sometimes)

Hmmmm. after a little bit of looking around I found the MMORPG I was thinking about. apparently it launched back in March (I heard about it last christmas and thought it was a bit farther out than march) Its called Runes of Magic. It is a 3d environment similar to WoW from what I understand. I havent messed with it at all so I'm not sure how the gameplay is.

Found out I can't use any of the pay methods they have and it's too expensive anyway as I have no disposable income.

With any MMO (massively multiplayer online game) there is a monthly fee. The only way around this is to possibly play on a private server. A private server is a server ran, owned, and operated by someone other than blizzard. They are the only way you dont have to pay. Your friend would have to start a new account too. If you need more information, either google world of warcraft private servers, or contact me at mmowned.com (my username is Fault), we are a site devoted to things just like that.

Thanks Fault.:)
I don't mind initially purchasing the game for $20 or whatever it is. It's the registration fee and monthly fee that would be unaffordable and in my case wasteful as well. Like I said though, I have no way of paying it with the methods they offer even if I had the money.
The private server idea is good, but the hitch here is that my friend also has a few other friends that play with her so I don't know how many people would show up. While she may love me and all that, I'm not sure she would open a new account on another server if her other friends don't want to.
I'm not worried though, there are other things to do. No big loss.
I may contact you about some other games if thats alright. I need to find a server designed for players who get killed in games the minute they log on or at least every 2 minutes which happens to me. Kind of takes the fun out of it.:-/

I would just like to clarify that there is not a $20 registration fee for WoW. Just the game, $20 I believe for original WoW, and ~$13 a month to play. You had mentioned earlier that you can play for free, get your friend to "Refer a Friend" to your email. You can play for 10 days or so and determine if you enjoy it or not.

I'm fairly casual in that I don't raid, but I can't imagine someone not getting their life sucked enough to play 10 hours a week or so.

My friend that was a WoW addict in college had this argument for the monthly charge: "I pay ~13 a month for something I spend a lot of time playing each month. Thats like going to 1.5 movies, which lasts 4 hours max". Granted he played like 5 - 8 hours a day, so it was a real deal. But you see where he is going.

Anyhow, good luck

Its a bit more than that, because of the expansion packs
