I don't "hate" BR, I just dislike it strongly. Of course that could change if they improve it.
It's just that to me, the PQ is bad. I've looked at BR on different TVs, LCD & Plasma. (I have to say it's a tiny bit better on Plasma). It could also be my eyes, I don't know.:-/ Everything just looks too animated on BR. I have nothing against animation, but I just can't watch an action movie in animation.
Also BR discs are expensive as are the players. That being said though I think the price of the players may come down a bit eventually. I don't know about the discs though. BlueRay is starting to have kind of a tough time against DVD and new streaming digital tech. So we may see the begining of the end of BR in as little as a couple of years. (Hmm, that could also mean bargins to be had too).
Also, we will never see BR recorders (at least in the US). There are those of us who like to record stuff for permanency or storage and that means DVD. Sure it's a niche market, but still some of us have VHS tapes and whatever that we want to copy over to some kind of digital medium and that is DVD. The reason we will never see BR recorders or even decent DVD recorders is due in part at least to the cable companies and the like as will as market interest or so they say. They want people to buy or rent their DVRs like Tivos and such and pay extra monthly fees to record something on HDD on a temporary basis. (Too expensive for me).
In my view, it is actually cheaper to buy the DVDs of the movies and what have you. Also, if you have a good upconverting DVD player that is maybe even multi format (but not necessary) then DVDs look incredibly good.
That's my reasoning anyway, doesn't mean it's universally correct. It's just true for me.

I have to side with Anewbus, even though I'm not real up to date with the Blue ray thing. For serious movie buffs it may be the cats meow. But I'm still amazed by the HD I get on Dish, without all the overly expensive Blue Ray stuff.

well maybe no blu ray recorders..but we do have blu ray burners...which is an upgrade from where were starting at...but i see your point...blu rays picture quality isnt worth the cost... but does it have to be like "animated" my ps3 uses blu ray discs for games and they look utterly beautiful... course they may have done just as well with the DVD format

A good blu-ray in 120hz is one of the most stunning things I've ever seen.

Actually, we do not have HT or PC BR burners that burn to a blank BR disc. What we do have are PC combo drives that play BR and burn DVD and CD. We won't be seeing consumer BR burners any time in the future.

I was confused by that too, thought I missed some new technology somewhere along the line. :wideeyed:

I am not on the BR band wagon yet (I don't have) I don't even have HD TV yet. From reading I believe a review of HD TV. Don't they have different settings? Like one to give more of a film quality to the display and others? If so could this be used to offset that animation quality you dislike? Or am I just confused and off base?
And to all Anew and I save lots of money by not being early adopters of new technology.
And Anew it took guts to even mention VHS? I mean if you had said Betamax I bet half would have said what?

Yes, most TVs have settings, but I can get BR quality or better with an HD TV and a good DVD player hooked up via HDMI or even Component. The big difference is the compression and sound data. They can encode 7.1 and advanced THX on a BR disc, but can only encode up to 5.1 and standard THX on DVD. I'm an audiophile of sorts and I see no reason to go beyond what the human ear and brain can process when it comes to sound in movies and such. A good 5.1 system with a receiver that can process THX directly will take care of everything. Besdies my rule of thumb which may not be correct is More Compression = more sound and PQ degregation. Example = MP3s, sure they are convienant and all, but even at 128 - 320 bits certain nuances are lost and the sound quality loses it's fullness. I usually take the trouble to convert MP3s back to redbook CD audio or at least .wav which is similar (and if needed remix). That's just me though, note the key phrase "take the trouble" indicating that not everyone will want to do that.;)
Yes, cutting edge tech can be an expensive venture or at least a frustrating one. I'm the biggest holdout in the world. (Got my first TV in 1995, Just got my second TV (LCD HD) back in November 2008, Jumped in the Internet almost 3 years after everyone else was on, converted to XP only 4 years ago and by force, got my first laptop I presently own long long long after everyone else has had at least two, waiting until Windows 7 is either forced on me or until it is near it's end to convert over, etc).
Lots of folks have VHS tapes, doesn't mean they still record in that format. I don't, but I have stuff I want to keep that you can not find on DVD anyplace so I got into converting 9in a deep scientific way I might add thanks to some help from an AV science board that saved me some costly mistakes).
