Hmmm... those 3dmark scores are lower than I would expect. I guess the gtx260 is pretty decently underclocked in the g51. That's a shame.

Hm? Im pretty sure those clocks are about where theyre supposed to be, or rather, they are closer to the NP8662 than the BB version is, unless my memory is off, which, I dont think it is.

Care to spill the beans on the clocks Justin? I think theyre about the same as the GTX 260m in the Sager.

One thing I did notice, is that the 3dmark scores do seem a little weird, mainly because 3dmark06 is a singlethreaded app, yet, the T9900 loses to the QX9300:eeek2:

At least, I thought 3dmark06 was singlethreaded ( shouldnt the Q9000 beat the T9900 as well? )...

I was deciding between this computer and the msi 1651 ID2

it surprising to see the somewhat significant difference in their scores with the same processors (before the turbo function enabled, q9000 500 point difference)

im also curious to know the clocks on the gtx260m

ok so some benchmarks were posted by gentechpc and they showed a screenshot of the gtx260m clock speeds...

(standards are from notebookcheck.net)

core posted at: 500 vs 550
memory posted at: 799 vs 950
shader posted at: 1250 vs 1375

does seem to be quite underclocked

If those are the clocks then it is in fact the same as the G51 in the BB model.

i think the temperature is quite high, something like cooking d. then it is downclocked, if wan to over clock i think is 100c ++ d. Justin can show something overclock(performance and heat). any AS5 added in above model? can also full review the laptop(I wan look its side view, main view , lights, cover and etc.). i can i see the review temperature of laptop(after gaming) with AS5 and also without AS5.

i didnt realize how drastically asus had to downclock this card to maintain a decent heat. i mean, in applications and games im sure the performance difference is eh not too big but its a shame that there was not a viable solution (or else im sure asus would have implimented it)

but in any case im still going to order one :D

since im going to college and have a nice desk to use all of the time a notebook cooler is definitely something i could see myself investing a little money into, which means i might be able to clock it up a bit

we'll have to wait and see

*o and on a second read through i did notice that the 3dmark tested on this laptop and the msi 1651 were at different resolutions which does affect the overall score

My 8662 gets higher scores than all configs and I have a 2.8 Ghz duo. The clocks are lowered.

91º C under full utilization with the GPU that under-clocked! I'm sure glad I ordered the AS5 on mine. ASUS should have found room for a second fan somewhere in there so they didn't have to clock it down so much...

Something I wonder about.. Does the Arctic Silver 5 grease on GPU really help, or is this just a "gee whiz" thing for enthusiasts?

Also, someone commented about the Sager 8662 being so much better. I'd say that depends what you're looking for. If you configure the 8662 like the stock Asus computer, you'll find:
1) 8662 costs $300 more
2) 8662's display is a little bit smaller
3) 8662 is almost 10% heavier
4) 8662 only has one hard drive

For me the only differences I would care about are the $300 and the 2nd hard drive. For capturing and editing video a 2nd hard drive is a MUST. While reading / writing video on the system drive, every time the OS needs to access files (especially the swap file), the video processing gets stopped. When capturing that can mean dropped frames. When encoding and rendering it can add hours. Yeah you could connect an external drive for the media files, but I'd rather have the drive built-in. This is probably all a big non-issue for gamers who could care less about video editing, but for some few of us oddballs who do video editing it's a real plus on the Asus machine. I'll wait for the G71 due to larger screen.

I went ahead an ordered one anyway. It's a nice package. There are a lot of nice features on the Asus that are not on the 8662. Backlit keyboard, LED screen, 2nd hard drive, optional larger battery (9 cell), 2 year warranty, included accessories with backpack, mouse, eeestick, preinstalled OS with free upgrade to Windows 7.

Decent package for the buck IMO if you want to use this computer for more than just gaming.

As for AS5, yes, it does help temps.

1) After customizing them ( which means I did edit both of them ) to be as close to the exact same as possible, I got a difference of about $250, with $175 being the resolution upgrade.

So basically, without the screen option ( which I imagine most would forgo ), the NP8662 is about $75 more than the G51, and has about 140GB less space. Now, this is all on paper, which does not tell the whole story;)

2) For some, that is a caveat, for others that is a blessing, it all depends on your position on the matter. I personally think WUXGA is a bit too large for a 15", you may disagree with me

3) Its heavier because its better quality:p

Seriously, that is a small surprise, but really, 10%? So if the G51 is 6lbs, the NP8662 is 6.6lbs? There really isnt too much of a difference there. Were it 30% heavier, ok, that is significant, but when looking at a machine like this, I didnt really think weight was something you look at.

4) This is a big one for me, this is actually one of the biggest reasons Im skipping the NP8662.

Both of you should read this, all of it.

Now, who you are and what you want will sway your decision to either side, but after using a laptop that often hits temps like this

http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/rr245/NasGhost/hot1asus.png

you can bet that an adequate cooling system is very important to me. Each system has its caveats, and each person will choose accordingly and make sacrifice, and while I would absolutely love having 1TB ( possibly 2TB depending if the WDs fit ), I would rather not be burned instead ( and I do mean that quite literally );)

Please make any comments in the G51 Review Thread instead of creating new threads.

We will merge this into the G51 Review Thread. We will provide more benchmarks as soon as we can.

Just posting here things that I've been posting elsewhere. With my new G51Vx-A1, these are the numbers I've been seeing.

MODIFICATIONS:

I removed the standard video card drivers and installed the Dox 185.85 drivers, which I originally believed brought the 260m up to stock speeds (give me a break, I'm new at this). This belief was reinforced by the fact that it did get better framerates in Furmark after I changed the drivers. Nevertheless, I am disappointed to conclude that while it does perform better with Dox, it still doesn't match the standard 260m. I'm going to be doing some gpu overclocking experiments soon to determine if it can be brought up there.

I used SetFSB to overclock the CPU to 2.2 GHz. This is by no means the maximum overclock possible, but it's the highest I personally have done so far.

COOLING:

I had XoticPC add AS5 to the CPU and GPU. I also purchased a notebook cooler, and I run all my games on it.

CRYSIS:

I tested out my settings using Crysis and Crysis: Warhead. The graphics settings were Very High on Crysis and Enthusiast on Crysis: Warhead. I played at 1088x612 resolution and I had 2x AA on. While I didn't measure my framerate at these settings, it was more than good enough to play.

TEMPERATURES:

None of the four cores ever went higher than the low sixties while playing either Crysis, although Orthos tests resulted in temperatures as high as 74C.

The gpu temp, however, maxed out at 89C. On occasion, when the ambient temperature in the room was high (with this heat wave we've been having here in NJ, where the room I was playing in was hot enough that I was sweating) it climbed only as high as 92C. And these numbers are after an hour plus of gameplay.

3DMARK

Using 3DMark Vantage with my setup, I got a score of P5365, with an individual CPU score of 23957 and a GPU score of 4262. I don't understand why my CPU score is so much higher than the one posted here, but those are the numbers I got.

Just felt I should post this.

Just overclocked my gpu to 260m standard clocks (550/1375/950). overclocked my cpu to 2.3GHz. Temps remained fine. GPU peaked at 90C, just one degree higher than otherwise, even after nearly an hour of Crysis Warhead gameplay. I'll do more tests over the next few days to determine how acurate this was, but it's very promising.

Hi rellim may i know how u oc ur GPU to standard clocks on G51? and when u say standard clocks, does that mean it is running exactly the same as the one on the 8662?
thanks

Standard clocks are a little higher in than even the NP8662; the NP8662 has is memory clocked reduced to 800mhz I believe, since its using an MXM 2.1 socket, rather than an MXM 3.
