The NP9280 is a great portable desktop. But what will come next? Which number will it use? What new features will it include (e.g. Media Buttons etc.)? Will it hold 2 graphic cards? Let me know what you all think :D

This thread is for discussing what you would like to see on Sager's next portable desktop.

Enjoy.

It's called the NP9850

The 9850 and the 9280 were released at the same time and are aimed at similar but different markets. The 9280 boasts CPU power ( you can overclock the 920 around 400mhz+, and once the new lower TDP CPUs come in, you will likely be able to overclock them even further ), while the 9850 boats GPU power. At the moment, there isnt anything to upgrade too, unless ATI were to release the mobile HD 4870 using GDDR5 memory.

As for what be in there, Im not even sure, Westmere will be out in the next 6 months or so, and hopefully that will fit ( it seems to use the same socket ), but mobile DX11 GPUs are looking at close to a year ( maybe like 9-10 months, though word is that ATI wants to release their mobile DX11 GPUs soon after the desktop ones ).

What I want to see? Well, putting SLId cards in a notebook like that ( with a 130W TDP CPU ) is just asking for trouble, especially considering the GTX 280m has a TDP of 75W on its own. The fact that it can reasonably cool the i7 series is a feat in itself, especially when considering some laptops dont even have 130W TDP in total in all of there components. What ever they put in there, you can bet it will beastly.

One more thing, El Mago, I hate to burst your bubble, but you only have 1024mb usable Vram.

NasGhost: you only have 1024mb usable Vram...

Yep, you are right on that. I just copied and paste what xoticpc stated in their site without editing, but a gig of useable memory is still certainly sweet...for now.

hmm

facial recognition software? Or at least a fingerprint reader.

USB 3.0 (no more eSATA or FireWire needed)? PCIe 3.0?

IR port w/ media remote?

INDUCTIVE CHARGING! =O

and of course, options for the latest best in HDD, CPU, GPU, RAM, Optical, etc (when's that durn PureSi 1TB SSD gonna show up?)

wishful thinking: better, sleeker chassis design, like the new MacBooks; more specifically GLASS screens. yeah, i know, I dream big.

the NP9280 is superior to the NP9850 in screen resolution, CPU power, memory, bus speed, camera resolution, RAID options, and PRICE.

:wideeyed:
the NP9850 is impressive at first glance, but when you compare it to the older NP9280, it has little going for it.

Am I wrong?? Tell me what you think.

I'm hoping for the 9282T...basically the 9280 with a multitouch screen.

It seems that many manufacturers are going this way, with AIOs and now a few laptops...I'd hold out for that.

I don't see any huge leaps in tech coming our way in the near future, but adding the touchscreen aspect to the 9280 would rock my world.

I'm waiting to get a new laptop till prices and finances are in line, but I'd jump on that now...Clevo take note!

Sorry for probably sounding dumb, but why would there only be 1024mb of usable vram, when there is 1024mb of vram in each of the cards? Could you kindly explain this?

Yep, I agree....... it was good having a bit of hotdog to hold my chili together....... I stopped myself after two though....... had to think of everyone else there.......

Sweet, thanks for someone answering my question, but anyway...
I wonder when we will see the new 300m series cards from Nvidia, with DirectX 11, on the Sager laptops. Early 2010? And Intel is going to be coming out with the new Core i9 processors, i wonder when they will be available for laptops. I will be buying a sager laptop around july 2010, and i want to make sure i buy my laptop at the best time, if anyone gives a shit..

Of course, it would be too much to ask for you to actually do some walking yourself and search for the answer to your own question wouldnt it?;)

And God-forbid me to ask you to realize how inactive this forum is because, clearly, it is ridiculously active.

To answer your questions, in order:

Late 2010; if they cant even create Fermi for desktops ( outside of Tesla ), then transitioning to laptops will be another feat itself. We wont even see commercial Fermi until 2010, looking for the mobile derivative before fall of 2010 is just asking for dissapointment.

Regarding i9, a mobile variant of i9 isnt even definite; i7 was actually meant for the server market, and the public were basically guinea pigs. Im not seeing i9 going mobile, but rather an advancement in microarchitecture, next being Sandybridge.

Oh, and before I forget, to answer your first question, its because each GPU needs a copy of the data to work in multi-GPU situations, so even though the Vram is doubled, the data ( all GPUs get the same data )still needs be sent to each GPU, negating the increase in Vram.

I think the next upgrade for the 9280 would be SSD as the main disk.
