Well, Just so happens I'm an RPG Fan myself....Check out these titles, I'm sure you won't be disappointed:
1) Mass Effect (Sequel coming out shortly)
2) The Witcher
3)The Knights of the Old Republic Series: 1 and 2

And at the top: The 'Deus EX' Series...the first one released in 2000, So it's pretty old, But the STORY....is something to behold. The second one, Deus EX 2: Invisible War, I've heard it isn't as good as he first one, but I would still give it a try. And Now: Deus EX 3, To be released soon.

4)Fable: This one is pretty good, but not, well, Excellent.
5)The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion: This one is a very ambitious RPG, with a large and beautiful world to explore, BUT the combat system SUCKS, so in the end it gets kinda boring.

Of all these, The Witcher comes particularly recommended. And I'm not sure about the compatibility of the Deus EX series...KOTOR 1 and 2 you could get to run in Vista with a bit of google magic...But they're not EXACTLY Vista-Ready. I don't own the series myself, but I've seen them being played, and I was very impressed.

The Thief series is pretty good

Thief: The dark project (1st of the seris, goodluck getting it to work on XP or Vista - i have yet to get one running without massive registry edits)
Thief II: Metal Age - 2nd of series, worked flawlessly for me on Vista 64 and Xp pro (exception that it has problems with multicore processors - easy to fix though - just set affinity so that it only uses a single core)

Thief 3: Deadly Shadows - 3rd in series, worked perfectly

Got to agree with The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. An excellent game. Huge customization, fully free roam, deep story line and lots of DLC.

Anyone excited for Dragon Age Origins? I will certainly be purchasing it on the Xbox 360

Haha. :)

I totally loved FF8/FF7 -- story, music, art, the whole nine yards. Skipped 9 and variations of 10. Tried playing 11 (MMORPG) but didn't enjoy having to wait forever to find a party to play. Hope they do better on 14.

I'm a big fan of old school 'Diablo' games. Can't wait for Diablo 3!!

Possibly Fallout 1,2,3
Possibly Dragon Quest (if you're a console gamer as well)

Xenogears for the original playstation. I'm a big Final Fantasy fan and I consider this game to be even better than anything in the FF series. It's around 80-90 hours and many consider it to have the best plot of any RPG ever made. It's a Squaresoft game that was so edgy that it almost didn't get released in North America.

If you don't have a playstation you can just use an emulator, any computer from the last seven years is powerful enough to emulate the old PSX. If you have a PSP then you can emulate it on it too (I play it all the time when I travel).

There were other games released that were kind of related to Xenogears called Xenosaga but the storyline is different and not as good as Xenogears.

Another more recent game that is quite good is The Witcher: Enhanced Edition.
