I would personally like a google operating system. Google has always had a really good knack for developing great products, and I think that they could really give MicroSoft and Apple a good run for their money, especially if it were based upon the Linux Kernel and marketed properly.

well, before using google, just be sure that you will be giving away whatever privacy is left. I hope you guys know how google is collecting all of the information. And with OS, I am sure whatever info you store or whatever you do will be sent back to Google!!!
Not that I am against google, even I am a fan of their innovations, but it's just a bit of stretch.

I wouldn't think that google would target a mainstream gaming audience, because they'd need to get developers on board for that. They would more likely look to put an internet-based OS with a free version of Google Docs/Open Office built in targeted at the netbook market.

Im bored so heres a poll, what is your favorite operating system? I like XP the most, nothing else is better.

Faraphy73,
Totally disagree with your opinion. I love 7 way better than XP.

I would have to agree that Win7 is better than XP. Been using it for quite sometime now and it is in fact really awesome.
Would love to try Google's new OS though. When is it coming by the way?

As of now, it's in Developer Only Beta which should mean we'll start seeing dates late this year or early 2011.

So is this confirmed that Google Docs is built on the same framework or the same thing as Open Office? If so this makes me extremely nervous and likely to delete it. I thought it was a free, open source Office tool being offered by SUN, with no Google involvement. With Google involved it means my documents aren't safe to be ripped off by them or spied on by them. Also, I'm likely to reboot my entire OS given I don't trust that Google hasn't inserted some insidious cookie though I suppose I might be good just deleting Office given that Windows is closed source. This is if Open Office has any Google involvement.
As for the OS no way am I letting the NSA or CIA get an open door into my comp., so no, I will NOT be downloading or going near the Google OS. If you think I'm crazy Google won't comment on their relationship with the NSA and one of their founders was a former member of the CIA.
Also, before anyone broaches the "Well if you have nothing to hide what are you worried about?", most in society are hypocrites even to perfectly ok and mundane things.

Actually, I'm with you on this. I don't want someone spying on my private docs. Yeah I may not have anything illegal to hide, but what if there were private photos with a significant other, etc. You don't want that stuff getting out. And it's a breach of privacy, no one wants that.

Exactly Mehkit and it can be even more mundane then that. A man once, in his off time from work, was caught wearing "women's" clothing(like a Toga isn't a dress and there weren't male kimonos, etc.). When he was found out he was fired. That's perfectly mundane and HOW can anyone care about that?! People are prejudiced against some of the dumbest things.
I think he lived in Tennessee or Kentucky, one of the middle eastern Southern states. I apologize I can't give you the news specifics.
edit: Anyway, I've said my piece.

Based on everything I've read, it seems like the Google Chrome OS is really geared towards netbooks. I would never use it for my regular lappy and I don't see it as being as robust as necessary to work that way.

Exactly. I don't mind using their Chrome browser cause that thing is pretty nifty, but not an OS.

Lots of conspiracy about Google, here are my thoughts about it.
I'm not fond of Google Chrome or any OS offered by them, but that's mainly because Google's focus is on pushing their own standards. I use Android OS on my phone and it works great but I have also tried Google Chrome and didn't like it at all.
I think Google should release an OS because Microsoft needs someone to keep them in check and to offer people an alternative to Windows or Linux as they are both an extreme of their own. Microsoft has market share and is fairly proprietary in most aspects of their programs, and Linux is open source but to a fault that any user needs to have at least a basic understanding of coding and compiling to be able to comfortably use it.
As for the conspiracy about Google OS, well I think the ideas expressed are overboard. Microsoft collects data about their users computers and computer hardware and we have just come to accept it, even some games collect data about the users, and most websites you visit have tracking cookies. Google OS would be no more intrusive than any of the these things most of us use daily without knowing or understanding how it works. As for the NSA/CIA seeing your files, well I hate to tell you but if either of them have an interest in you or your computer they have the resources to get that information if you like it or not.
With everything in our daily lives that other companies use to track us or gather information about us Google OS is no better or worse than any of them. You are tracked via your bank accounts, phone, text messages, credit cards, websites you visit, programs you install on your computer, stores you visit that ask you for your area code, loans, electric/gas bill etc etc, if something you do at some point has a digital interaction you are tracked with it.
While I do not agree with all the methods that we are tracked, and usually without our knowledge it is a simple fact that we ARE, and Google OS will be no different than anything else we use in our daily lives.
As for WinXP, seriously, its a decade old OS and support for it will be stopping soon now that companies are starting to migrate to Win7. Its time to move on and upgrade and be thankful you got 10 years out of an OS from Microsoft because it will never happen again.

QFT +1.
I will probably be utilizing the Google OS, but I plan to try and use it on a thumb drive to enable me to troubleshoot systems that have more serious issues that won't let the OS load, etc. Hopefully it will have that functionality available.

Best thumbdrive OS is Linux by far, and can allow you to bypass security measures of Windows if its needed to troubleshoot a system. Kinda doubtful that Google will have this amount of functionality.
I havent looked into Googles new OS, is it Unix/Linux based like their Android OS or Mac OS? or is this a truly new OS?

Finger my concern is it becoming popular enough that it receives the Lion's share of games exclusive, with most people downloading it and using it instead of Windows. I'm not afraid of video encoding tools becoming Google OS exclusive as such.
On the first point it's the coding that concerns me. As for Google itself I quite consider it Arsenal Gear. If you've played Metal Gear Solid 2 you get the ref. I believe using Google in things like an OS gives the CIA and NSA(which should be done away with and is a totally unnecessary government agency in my opinion) everything about you in a neat, quick, easily accessible package to access. Even if they wanted it enough they could find a way to access it I'd rather they have a time doing it and have to get the electronic warrants as such.

That is true considering how google doesn't care about privacy..it's a fact they give any and all info to gov't agencies.

Here is a heads up, the Government ALREADY has all the information about you they need, and a "Lions Share" of conspiracy nutjobs still equals out to a bunch of nutjobs. If you honestly think that Microsoft, Linux, Apple dont all have some nice little back door that our Government have access too then your simply fooling yourself. If someone wants your information, legit or illegal and they have the right applications on their computer THEY WILL GET ANYTHING OFF YOUR DRIVE THEY WANT, PERIOD, this stands for Government or criminals alike. Now for someone like the CIA needing to get warrants etc to hack or take your computer do you honestly think it would take more than the 30 second phone call to make it happen, or that they couldn't pop the top off your "home security" in 30 seconds or less from 500 miles away and have your information 2 minutes after that. I've seen hard drives literally RUN OVER BY A TRAIN and the people and programs that can retrieve over 90% of the information on the drive, don't you think they have the ability to bypass your little home router and about a dozen different ways to bypass what Microsoft calls "security" and get your information?
As I said before, 99% of your life is tracked and documented already and if you have an active internet life then you just expand the information they have on you to begin with.
Read your Terms of Service agreements on pretty much everything you install on your computer or any contracts you ever sign, you would be shocked to know what they actually say.
As for this huge conspiracy between Google and the CIA/NSA I think is blown so far out of proportion by nutjobs that if there was any actual fact to it the Google OS will last about a month before everything you claim is exposed and will ruin Google's reputation forever. There are hackers and program specialists across the world that put EVERY OS through its paces for security and what information the OS sends out and are more then happy to blow the whistle on any scandalous activity.
I believe a little skepticism and paranoia are a good thing, but I think this topic is WAY out of control with conspiracy. Last time I heard this much hype and false information was when Battlefield 2142 released and it had dynamic ad's on billboards in the game, if you would have listened to all the nutjobs then it sounded just like this Google OS conspiracy does now.
Long story short, if you want the Government to know nothing about you then you need to build a shack in the mountains with no roads to it, never use any digital device, never pay taxes or bills, and only pay for anything in cold hard cash.
And since most everyone has an HD TV then you should all know about the camera in the little light at the bottom of the TV that Big Brother uses to watch you 24/7!

And to the others claiming Google's supposed free-giving of personal information to anyone that wants it:
Actually, of all the search engines out there, Google is the most friendly to it's users. When user search records were demanded, it was the only search engine that did not comply.
As well, what personal information do they keep? Do the cookies that are stored on your computer (By the way, any website that you log in to, do a search on, input any information whatsoever, and also your own web browser does all of this) store snapshots from your webcam, input your address/GPS location etc. in them? Yes, they keep logs, but the log ends up being something like the following (Simplified of course):
inktomi1-lng.server.ntl.com - 25/Mar/2003 10:15:32 - http://www.google.com/search?q=cars" - MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1 - 740674ce2123e969
Where is it that you saw they were keeping your personal information and giving it out?
