There seems to have been a leak in regards to the next ati mobility series:

I really want to see how it turns out as my last laptop died because of Nvidia's defective laptop GPUs, 7600 go was mine but it was one of many. I was really hoping to get a gaming laptop with a ati card but at the moment there really isn't any. And the heat issues with the gtx 260 just remind me of my overheating/eventually melting down hp with the 7600. which btw HP(terrible customer service) didn't do jack about, but that's a whole different topic.
I was thinking of getting a laptop but I think I'm going to wait to see what happens with the next series of laptop GPU's.
any news on the next series from either company?

I will be PISSED if they neuter the 5830 and give it GDDR3 memory.

I thought the xx30 meant neuter? What HP? Or is HP doing the 4830? Neuter is what is going to happen?
Yea it's GDDR3 from all I have read. But you guys need to comprehend what that means. And how it might not really matter.

I though xx30 just meant lower than xx50 and xx70. The fact that its also 58xx denotes that its high end.
As I see it, using GDDR3 over GDDR5 cuts the memory bandwidth in half, which kills the cards overall performance, and puts it more near mid range though Id really like to know how it wouldnt really matter, especially since I dont see ATI using a 256-bit bus.

I was a little tongue in cheek sort of. You are correct in your general understanding. It is the second number that denotes high/mid/low. First is generation. But at least current the last two 50 and 70 have all the stream processors going. In say the 4850/70 800. The 4830/60 640 but higher clocked relatively. So stock the 30/60 are factory overclocked. The 4830 is an OC 4850 with some SP's disabled the 4860 is 4870 OC some SP's disabled.
What the heck does that mean? Not much but if you can OC you 50/70 you have more head room than with 30/60.
I expect similar with 5xxx but just a guess. Currently yes the 4830 is the most powerful ATI card I have seen. But the weakest 48xx OC is less than what I wanted.
It can also be said that the 4860 is an OC 4830 and the 4870 is an OC 4850. However you look at it the 30/60 are far more factory OC than 50/70.
Anyway just the ramblings of guy with no real point, sorry.

If anything you should be "pissed" at Asus as it is up to them to provide everything that you are looking for. Have you tried Asus support because I found 60 updates on Asus's support page for the laptop you have.

Glad that you dug this post up a year later.
