Ordered mine today; almost identical to Bryce's, except I went with the DVD instead of blu-ray (I was going to go blu-ray, but heck, I don't even own any blu-rays) and I went with 6GB instead of 4.
I'm looking forward to that SSD drive.

There was a 2 week back order at Sager but I finally received it. Overall impressions 7.5 out of 10.
Pros:
17" HD LED screen. I assure you there is no better laptop monitor out there. This one even beats out Mac book pro in brightness, color and detail.
Keyboard Layout. The spaced out keys makes it very easy to type.
I7 mobile processor: Not as good as the desktop version, but it's still pretty good. I was expecting to see more power saving here considering, but it doesn't seem to save much on battery life.
Nvidia 280 Graphics: Great for gaming.
Connectivity: All the right ports, only issue was the backdoor (but it was very easy to remove)
Cons:
Speakers: They don't get very loud, and have virtual no bass. Probably worst speakers Ive seen in a laptop. I dont really want to have to hook up or carry around extra speakers. If I can figure out a way to mod them I will.
AC Adapter: Would someone please explain to me that after all these years of mac's having a very tiny ac adapter that magnetically locks that other companies can't figure out how to do something similar. The AC adapter is definitely not easy to carry around and adds about 5lbs to your travel bag.
Fans: Can be loud, but they haven't reached annoying in my book.
Battery life: As I was stating earlier you would think this would last longer considering the i7 Mobile chip, LED screen, etc, but it seems to get the same battery life as the 9280, which actually contains the desktop i7. This system is definitely built to be a desktop replacement, but I'm almost thinking it would have been better to go with the 9280 so you could actually get all of the i7 power, since you have to keep it plugged in all the time anyway.
Webcam: Sucks (recommend the logitech Webcam 905, HD video and sound)
Overall the monitor makes this system shine. I seriously love looking at this thing and the i7 mobile does take care of everything fairly nicely. Now if I could just find a smaller ac adapter and some better speakers I'd be set. Any recommendations?
Oh and for all those considering to buy, xoticpc is the way to go. The cash discount is great, but the customer service is what sales it. You gotta problem they solve it quick.

Mine arrived on Dec 31, nearly a week before the estimate. I guess the skinning takes less time, and I'm glad they beat the delivery instead of being late.
Quality is excellent. I was a little surprised at the lack of documentation - like, what is the "Personal Safe" that's installed? On the other hand, it might be in that laptop bag I haven't opened. :/
While in the middle of loading applications, I ran the Windows benchmark and got a 7.9. I ought to rerun it when the PC is idle, but I'm happy with that speed. This laptop should last me a long time. The only thing missing I've needed was a VGA connector, but fortunately my external monitor had a DVI-D connector so I just bought a new cable. If I ever need it for a projectors, perhaps a DVI-VGA converter will work.
I outfitted it with the MS 5000 wireless comfort keyboard and mouse, a powered 7-port USB hub, and some headphones so I don't disturb the wife at night. Right now Carbonite is restoring a bazillion gig to a folder so I can manually reinstall and organize.
Next step: my wife hates her Dell so much, I'll replace it with a Sager.

Just got mine today. Skinning looks great, and so far very happy with it, despite a rather worrisome first start:
When I booted for the first time, Windows 7 displayed the warning about being improperly shut down. That got me a little worried about the initial setup.
Then when it booted in, I noticed a loud high-pitched whine coming from the right speaker any time there was CPU activity.
Fortunately a Realtek HD Audio driver update took care of that problem - but I'm a little surprised this was not taken care of during testing and burn-in.
The only real issue I am having is the crazy way of scrolling using the touchpad - instead of moving your finger up and down, as you expect, there are tap zones at the top and bottom that simulate one turn of the scrollwheel per tap. This is extremely frustrating for someone used to the 'normal' way of scrolling.
Does anyone know of a solution to this? Is this even solvable?
All in all, very satisfied with the machine, except for the issue above.

Can you get in mouse properties and disable? I don't have this model but I always disable touch pad scrolling and tap functions on all mine.
EugeneT
01-09-2010, 12:42 AM
I can certainly disable them, but I'm very much in need of this feature - I am very used to working with touchpad scrolling, so I'd much rather have this backwards way of doing it, than nothing at all.
I wish there was some driver-related fix I could apply that would make this behave the normal way. It's actually problematic in games too - my finger slides over that area by accident, and I am switching weapons/zooming, etc. without wanting to do so.
EugeneT

Digging deeper, it looks like the Sentilic touchpad that is provided with this machine is considerably inferior to the typical but more expensive Synaptics touchpads we are all used to.
Due to licensing/patent issues, Sentilic is not allowed to provide the 'normal' scrolling functionality, and so the top-to-scroll is what we're stuck with.
I'm still looking for a solution, but this is a bit of a bummer, as I would expect a $3k+ machine to have quality parts in all areas.
MSI Wind has the same problem, apparently, and people have been going as far as manually replacing the touchpads, as they just couldn't deal with tap-to-scroll. I wonder if a similar option exists for us.
Edit:
Trying the Synaptics drivers did not help either - it just detected the touchpad as a PS/2 mouse, and did not provide any of the advanced features.

Mine has two minor issues -
1 - The fingerwipe logon isn't working consistently. After sleep mode, in the morning I powerup and swipe my finger. Sometimes I get a message to swipe slower. That alone would be normal, but at this point I can't logon at all. Hitting the "other credentials" button flashes the password box and then the same error. Same with the finger swipe. I have to powerdown, then "boot Windows normally" since I just powered off in the middle of a boot cycle. Subsequent bootups work fine.
2 - This one isn't Sager; I also bought a MS Comfort 5000 keyboard. I love the feel, though I miss LED and backlighting (the onscreen indicators are too fleeting). The problem is random keys stop working. This morning it was Left-Shift-P. Left-Shift-other keys work, so it's not the shift key. Lower case p works, so it's not the p key either. Right-Shift-P works. Taking out the battery seems to fix the problem. Yesterday it was the Left-Shift-W I had problems with.

Is this the right place to pick up drivers?
http://www.sagernotebook.com/information.php?information_id=7
I click on the 8760 link and get a list of drivers. The BIOS has a Dec 24 date, but when I download the zip file and click the .iso file, it asks me to register with CyberPower. I aborted at that point.

Yeah, I'm only getting sound out of two as well, at least when I test them through the Realtek Audio Manager. It's just a small complaint so far though as this thing is a beauty and better than I would have ever hoped for. Truth be told, the pictures I've seen of it don't do it justice and it's handling any game I throw at it.
I'm tempted to send ASUS an email thanking them for so thoroughly botching the release of the G73JH.

Well, I have the 8690 with the 5870 and I have no heat issues. I am not sure what the design difference is between the two except the screen size, but I can't see how it would make a difference from no heat issues to extreme heat issues.

I know that a complaint has been the scroll on the touch pad which is not necessarily a deal breaker (though would be annoying), but overheating is definitely something that would be. One thing it has going for it is that its got the i7-820 and its not a $500+ upgrade like for the new asus. Tough choice.

but honestly, is 1.73 vs 1.6 that big of a difference? OCed it's 3.06 on ONE core only and the rest shut down (cause that's how OCing a quad core works). The 1.6 is OCed at 2.8. Not a significant number if you ask me. But you didn't :smile2:

The difference is also in the amount of L2 cache. The i7-720 has 6MB, the 820 has 8MB.
Here is a benchmark (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=442139) showing the difference between the two. The 820 is the hands down winner in all cases.

If you actually read the thread, the general consensus is what I said, the change isn't a significant one. I didn't say there isn't an increase, it's just not that significant. The only thing you'll really see a difference on is a very CPU intensive application. But most people buying these things are gamers and MOST games rely on the GPU.

The cost of upgrading to one is not worth it at ~500 dollars in the G73, the cost of getting one stock at ~150 dollars is most certainly worth it when you compare the G73 to the 8760. For 150 dollars difference the baseline 820 is attractive. (Let's not rehash the old debate about which is better mmmmkay, cause you are in an 8760 owners thread trying to talk trash about it and saying they should've gotten the G73 because you think it is gods gift).
and BTW if you read the thread it also says that there are significant real world gains in applications that do a lot of video encoding and transcoding. I have seen plenty of people that want a laptop for both gaming and video/3d editing and the 820 is a better choice than the 720 in that case.

Again, I don't think the G73 is God's gift, which I've stated already, it just fit my budget. BUT in the thread you linked they even stated that at even $200 more it isn't worth it for games. 3D Sure! But GPU intensive games aren't going to see a significant increase when they barely use the CPU.
And, I agree, the video editing and what not, this is a great laptop! If I could afford it with the more ram and HDD space I would've jumped all over it. I"m just saying, for games alone, there might be better out there (not necessarily the G73).

I just got my 8760 with the ATI 5870 GPU installed and when high performance mode is selected and prime95 is running across all 8 logical cores the temperatures reached 77-80C. I had the laptop sitting on a cooler on my bed but I didn't turn on the cooler fans. So if a laptop can handle prime95 I think on the CPU side of things it's fine. I haven't stressed the GPU yet but it should run around the same as the Nvidia card and idle at a lower temperature.

I ran three loops of 3DMark Vantage and the CPU cores reached 75C. Unfortunately GPUz wasn't able to read the thermal diodes of the GPU either due to it needing a new version or the driver doesn't support it yet. The air coming out the back wasn't really all that warm so I think the GPU stayed fairly cool. I was using ATI mobile catalyst 10.3a for the test.
I have the IC Diamond thermal snot installed by XoticPC and tested with the laptop sitting on the table without the cooler plate. The room temperature was around 22C during the test
I got the Targus backpack option with this laptop, and I really like it. There are plenty of compartments and the laptop fits in it very well.

Both are good but the IC Diamond has better thermal characteristics. Good thermal paste will help drop the temps a few degrees. This is the first time I have had it in a laptop so I have nothing to compare against except the desktops I have been overclocking with high grade thermal snot :)

What is the TPD of that chip? I have the ATI version which has a TPD of 55W and I don't have any heat issues. Really I don't see the point in getting the Nvidia version since the idle power consumption will be higher not to meantion it does not perform as well and adds 50 dollars to the cost.

first question would be why get the GTX285M when you can get the ATi 5870 which is a better card in almost every test. If you are set on Nvidia then consider that the TDP for the ATi 5870 is 50W and the TDP on the GTX285M is 75W. That is 33% more power consumed by the Nvidia and that is going to cause more heat. Thus as you add more components there is more heat to be disappated. So the likelihood of overheating with the Nvidia card is greater than with the ATi.

I don't think so. In my opinion, a GTX 285M has Nvidia Physx and CUDA on it for best gaming experience. From all the tests I've seen now, the NVIDIA has a temperature of 75C in 3d Mark Vantage, while the ATI one has 86-88C. From my experience, I can say that ATI cards gain more temperature than the NVIDIA ones, not only on laptops, but to Desktops too.

except that CUDA is going to be obsolete very soon when OpenCL takes a hold of the market due to portability across GPU platforms.
If you want to pay more for a card that performs worse in any game that doesn't support physX, than less for the one that doesn't, when there are exactly 16 games (http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_physxgames_home.html) that support it be my guest.
There is no way that you can tell me a card that draws 33% more power runs cooler, its not even possible in the world of energy conversion. You also haven't said if the cooling solution used was the same or not. I imagine you don't know.

Like Mav said, CUDA is a dying technology. ATi has realized this and their new stuff is built ON OpenCL technology.

CUDA will be around for a while unfortuately. Offloading graphics and physics to the same GPU ASIC does not sound like a good idea to me unless you game with all the bells and whistles turned off. I would take graphics quality over physics quality any day.
As for the heat generated under load.... that is probably due to the smaller die and package size. There will not be as much area to disappate the heat. Nevertheless the idle power consumption of the 5870 is very good which is what most want in a desktop replacement laptop since nobody in their right mind would game on these things on battery power.

On my old Alienware, I could cook dinner on it while gaming. My current pimped out Dell is much better, but i still have to run a desktop fan to keep the arse end from getting very hot to the touch. Basically, i would like a laptop that can keep its own while playing crysis.
On a second note, I hate loud fans - how quiet is the Sager?
PS its the Sager 8760 w/5870 & i7-820 that i am considering.

What is your opinion of the heat? I saw your post saying the exhaust air was reasonable, but are there any areas where it gets really hot to touch?
Did you ever get a 3D Vantage score on your rig?
Thanks in advance!

The middle towards the back gets a bit warm but that's where the processor is located if I remember correctly. This laptop must be placed on a flat surface otherwise it'll overheat since all the intakes are on the bottom. I just ran 3DMark vantage on it and it gets a P8675 score at stock settings.
Bummer on the shortage. I spotted this laptop with the ATI 5870 option before Justin even posted it in the forum so I got lucky I guess.

I found out that is actually does not make it a big difference, maybe 1-2 degrees...

Awesome! thanks for the feedback :) I was trying to decide between the Zalman and the Thermaltake. I've had a good experience with my Zalman heatsink on my tower.. so i'll probably go that route.
BTW I <3 this thing :).. I got it at around 5:30pm Az time today and had Win 7 pro installed 15mins later :) I haven't had a chance to load any games or anything else on it since I had to go to work.... But yeah it's beautiful and pretty quiet so far. We'll see how it runs once I get my games and other stuff on it.
The only thing i'd change is the silly plastic flap that covers the power, hdmi, and network ports. That cover seems flimsy and completely unnecessary since this thing is plugged into the wall pretty much all the time.. but seems like something that is easy to "fix" :)

Crysis Warhead installed fast as hell, and once I downloaded the patch for it, I booted it up. Played it for a few minutes with all settings set to gamer @ 1900 x 1080. This beast handled it like a champ.

Even though Mcrae changed laptops, I have my 8760 now, and yes there is trouble in Linux. Well, unless you have a bleeding edge kernel anyways. The Intel Ultimate 6300 wireless card iwlwifi drivers are available, but not in alot of the older kernels (Atleast not my 2.6.30-9 kernel on Backtrack 4).
Also, I have an odd problem... No eth0 interface. Does anyone know the specific model of the ethernet controller so I can find some drivers for it?

There is a CATV socket in NP8760. I did not buy the TV tuner and the Windows Media Center "Live TV Setup" won't let me move on with error message:"...because a TV Tuner is not detected".
Can we somehow not use a remote or TV tuner but enable that function? Is there a "software Tuner" that does the job?
Thanks.
Well, my 8760 just came today. All in all the reviews seem pretty accurate. Superb display, very powerful system, speakers aren't so great, and battery life is next to nothing. Overall I'm quite pleased, though. It looks like this system is going to be able to take basically any game I throw at it.
Regarding the audio, I've got a question for anyone who might be able to help. I've got an ATI Radeon 5870 and the regular Sound Blaster. Both of my laptop speakers work fine (I've tried some stereo test videos on YouTube). However, when I plug in headphones, I can only hear the left channel audio. Has anyone else had this problem?

Cyfox, the CATV socket isn't going to work no matter what you try. I actually called XoticPC about this and asked what the deal was with the CATV. Apparently it's just a vestige of the Clevo chasis that the 8760 is built on. Since there have been some changes in cable TV protocols (not sure what, exactly), the CATV has just been disabled. The only way to get TV is to buy an Expresscard tuner or a USB tuner. Even if you get the MCE remote and IR interface, all it will do is control Media Player.

No problem.
Interesting sidenote. I have an MCE remote from my old laptop. Just for kicks I tried it on my Sager. Apparently the IR receiver works even if you don't order the remote. Maybe they don't bother to deactivate the receiver on any of their laptops. So if you have a friend with an MCE remote, it's worth trying it out.
Just to try my luck, I also attempted to get cable with the CATV jack. As expected, it doesn't work.

Good choice! I've been happy with mine so far.Few complaints. Blu-ray player is a bit picky with some discs. Compressed number pad still annoys me. I did take off the little door covering the power jack ( how dysfunctional was that? Does anybody really use this thing on battery power? How many batteries would you need to lug around to get any use out of it?). Still not a fan of the Windows 7 interface ( for example, the system used to remember what folder you wanted to drop pics in to, now it doesnt care where the last pic went, its gonna drop it in the 'my pictures' default folder or force you to change the destination manually every time.) Seen a couple of BSOD for
some reason or other, but recovered without issue each time. Have yet to throw a game at it that chokes when being graphically cranked, so its purpose is being fullfilled. So far, no regrets over the purchase.
Theynine, I've been having Blu-ray issues too. Sometimes when I put a disc in it will recognize it right away. But if I close the Blu-ray player and reopen it later, it doesn't recognize the disc any longer. But I have trouble believing this is a hardware issue. You think it might be a problem with Windows 7? Let me know if you find out what's wrong or if there is better software out there.
Speaking of Blu-ray, I haven't seen any way to get surround sound out of the Cyberlink Blu-ray player that comes from Xoticpc. I know that with DVDs, you can just select some option in Windows Media player, but I don't think this will work with the Cyberlink player (again, likely has nothing to do with the hardware). Anyone know of a way to get surround sound with Blu-ray discs?
As for the cover over the power jack, I agree that it's sort of pointless. Maybe it would make more sense if the power jack were on the side and the modem port (which is also pretty useless in this day and age) were in the back. Honestly the only time I ever use battery power is when surfing the web briefly. And even then I turn on the power saver mode. I have to say that it was a pretty good idea for them to make a hotkey for that.
Anyway, so far I'm still quite pleased with my Sager too. Yeah, the power consumption is annoying. But I knew that this would be a problem from the moment I decided to get a gaming laptop of any kind, so whatever.

Hello NP8760 owners! Do any of you play wow? The reason I ask is because I saw a post on NBR (8760 owners lounge) saying that they were only able to get ~30 FPS in the game. I know very little about computers but 30 FPS on a 5 year old game with outdated models seems kind of depressing... :(
I'm also planning to get the cheapest CPU (i5-520m?) for my NP8760 in a few weeks. Would getting an i7-xxx drastically increase my FPS for games in general? I won't be using this laptop for anything other than gaming, web browsing, and watching stuff on Hulu/YT.

I get 100+ FPS in wow, unless I am in dalaran then it goes down to about 30-40 FPS. I run ultra settings with 1920x1080. So, I bet the guys were using the Nvidia GTX285M and not the ATI 5870 in those posts you are talking about. Also just so you know WoW models were updated with WoTLK release and are much newer than 5 years old (at least in WoTLK content areas). Cata will update all the old models in the old world once it is released as well.

I'm very interested in purchasing the 8760. I would like some feedback from you guys as to what would be the best upgrades to make. My budget is 2k. I was thinking about upgrading the CPU to the 840QM and the hard drive to 500GB. I will be adding a second SSD hard drive sometime in the near future.
Is it worth upgrading the ram to 6GB, and is this there a better set-up for customizing this laptop given my budget?

If you ask me the 740 for $150 is a price/performance value leader in the quad cores. $230 more for 133MHz/266MHz more is pricey. It is the current cost and for some worth it. But it is at a premium and I would not do.
500GB for $20 would be a very nice upgrade and cost is good.
6GB RAM upgrade I answered in more detail in a different thread to you. Long and short. Most do not need more than 4GB, if you do cheaper to upgrade on your own.

I would wait and see what happens with this model, it might be discontinued soon (rumor). If it ends up being discontinued you might be better off waiting and getting whatever the refresh of the model is. Check with Sager and see if they will let you know what their plans are for the model.

Hi everyone, soon to be a happy owner! I want to share this reply i received on another forum regarding gpus, I had chosen the 5870m:
I would have gone with the 460m personally.
<LI itxtvisited="1">First, nVidia's driver support has REALLY caught up for laptops. It's now at simultaneous release with desktop (http://www.xoticpcforums.com/showthread.php?t=5207&page=10#) drivers. This means we no longer get the "scavenger's delight" that used to plague notebook users. (I have a GTX 260m, and I love it). <LI itxtvisited="1">Second, even though the Mobility Radeon HD 5870 has 800 Stream Processing Units, it has two shortfalls. Stream Processing units are VIRTUAL... there is an INCREDIBLE amount of hyperthreading that goes on, if my memory serves me correctly it's something on the order of 5 stream units = one actual core... so in actuality it's 160 physical cores and 800 threads. The GTX 460m is 192 physical cores for processing.
Third, and perhaps most important, the bandwidth of the HD5870 is 128-bit, akin to the desktop 5750; whereas the 192-bit bandwidth of the GTX 460m is analogous to the desktop 460m (192-bit variation), but with 2x the GDDR5 RAM of the desktop variation (768MB v. 1,536MB). extra bits mean more bandwidth, and an overall better gaming experience to be had. I wish it was 256 bit (the GTX 260m - the 460m's predecessor - was 256-bit... but nVidia is banking on more cores and GDDR5 being able to offset bit-based bandwidth).
However, in terms of memory bandwidth, the HD5870 has a slight edge (64GB / sec v. 60GB / sec) and a lower TDP (50w v. 75w). Thus if you're looking for enhanced battery life, the ATi may be the way to go. However, ATi's driver support is spotty at best, and to me, I'd rather be a little slower and reliable than fast and have to hope and pray the new driver isn't going to kill my computer (http://www.xoticpcforums.com/showthread.php?t=5207&page=10#).
What do you all think about this?
(I hope he doesn't see that I posted this here)

Cooling on both should be good. 8760 should have slight advantage being larger. But not so much as to be a deal breaker. Yea I hear the same things about the cards as you. Two Drives on 8760?

So for gaming, 5870 vs GTX 460m, which one should I get? Does the 1.5GB matters?
powerpack
10-13-2010, 03:02 AM
I do not think the 1.5GB of memory makes any difference at this time unless you are using an external monitor far above FHD resolution. And even then I still don't think it matters. If I remember correct on desktop sites within the last year were saying unless you go above FHD 512MB is fine. Remember unused memory is wasted memory. 1GB vs 1.5GB is marketing if you ask me.
That said, it is clear the 5870 has more crank HP than 460. But like in a car how you get it to wheels is what matters. Nvidia has been very tricky and efficient at getting that HP to the wheels so to speak.
Joe here at Xotic says the 460 hangs right with the 5870 gaming. I have no reason to disagree. Except I do 100% know it is not the extra memory. Many games are coded to favor Nvidia. Fair or not it is reality. I think for myself I could be fine with either. I doubt it would be the deciding factor for me.
Good Luck.

Well, benchmarking wise, ATI had Nvidia beat. And this so-called 15% increase will most likely be a myth. I'm betting it only to be around 5% or so of an increase but only time will tell.

Do you guys own stock in ATI or something?
Why does it matter so much what another guy puts in his box for video?First if you read my posts I think I am somewhat fair and balanced (:D). How do you ask us if we have ATI stock? Do you have Nvidia stock? This talk of something that has not even happened yet (new drivers) seems more fanboyistic than any ATI comment.
But like I said before I bought ATI stock I could be fine with either.

You guys are going to have to show me proof of the 460M picking up a 15+% performance gain from drivers before I believe it.
well that is what he sent me http://blogs.nvidia.com/ntersect/2010/09/introducing-the-release-260-family-of-drivers.html (http://blogs.nvidia.com/ntersect/2010/09/introducing-the-release-260-family-of-drivers.html)

That shows a GTX460 Desktop card, which has very little in common with the laptop version of the same name.
No corwin I own no stock in any company directly (though who knows what my 401K with ING has in it). I simply want people to have realistic expectations of the equipment they buy so that they don't come back here pointing at this post and then yelling at Xotic when the 15+% increase in performance and/or 5870M beating FPS in games/benches don't happen.(which it may or may not, I am leaning towards the not)
I also hate people spending more money on worse hardware, which is just my personal pet annoyance and I tend to try and get people to think about the decision to spend more on hardware that might not pan out to do what they say it is going to do. Thats my A type personality showing through, but I can't count how many times people thank me for making them think rationally about a purchase before they did it.

well are you intent on buying it within the next week? If not wait til like Beginning of November and let this 260 series driver get main stream and see if the 460M really does pick up the gain they say it does. Then make your call, is 30 bucks worth paying for the 460M over the 5870. I would guess by November the Cat 11 release will be out as well and we could see some improvements out of the 5870M as well, but we'll see what happens.

AutoCAD and Photoshop are both programs that will definitely make good use of the better CPU and higher memory of the S1.
However, I suggest saving that $255 and going with the base 8760 and going with the 740QM since the difference between those two processors isn't that much to justify that much of a price difference.
With memory, you really won't notice the difference until you hit the memory limit of your PC, which you will do eventually when working in such memory intensive programs as AutoCAD and Photoshop. When you hit the limit, you'll get a lot more hitching and slowdowns as the OS has to write more stuff to the HD. Also, you'll be able to run fewer programs at once. 6GB is good enough, I usually run 8GB because when I'm doing game models, I often have the game running at the same time so I can quickly load stuff in.
You don't need the bluray player in the S1 either. Unless you really want to watch bluray movies on your laptop.

I don't see option for no BD on the S1? But if you can do your idea sounds solid. But you could also stick with the 740 and save more money?
The S1 is clearly spec'd out more favorably for some one like you that wants more RAM, 6300 and ICD.

You don't need the upgraded thermal paste nor the N6300. In both cases, the default paste and your normal wifi adapter will work just fine.
The high end thermal stuff is really only useful for those who want to overclock, something that most users do not need or should do. I will note, however, that even though you won't get the most use out of it, properly applied high end paste does result in better heat management for a laptop, if that's a concern. With the summer heat, I recently redid the thermal paste on my desktop and that resulted in a health 5-10 degrees Celsius drop in running temperature. But the reality is users like us (I use 3D Studio MAX, Maya, and Photoshop besides gaming) won't be pushing our laptops so hot that the default thermal paste can't handle it. Oh, and the heat is still generated even with better paste, it's just pushed out to the heat sinks to be ventilated more efficiently.
I have less experience with the upgraded wifi solutions, but usually those really don't add much in normal use. It's unlikely you will encounter a situation where you'll need the higher end NIC.
So, don't factor those 2 into it.
Also, it may be that the 840QM in the S1 is on some kind of special sale, being some kind of pre-upgraded model they have on hand for those with higher (more bleeding edge gamers) requirements than us need to base their laptops on.

I agree 100% that ICD is not "needed" the stock will function fine. That said I think it is not a bad idea if someone so chooses. It is a very economical upgrade. Cooler is always better, but yea your notebook likely to become obsolete for other reasons long before that would matter.
On the wi-fi I have the stock not even Intel and not considered great. I am still pulling in signal from neighbors. So unless you know you have signal issues most have plenty of range. Are you going to be connected to networks do very large file transfers often? Will the network be able to make use of the potential? I use wi-fi to connect to the Internet so speed is hardly a concern of mine. Any will do fine.
But nothing wrong with overbuilding better than underbuilding and if you have budget and you want to, then go for it.

Does the 8760 really have only 2 SODIMM slots?
yea, but why is that a problem?
That is actually way better than having to take apart the entire laptop (ASUS) to get up to 16GB of Ram. Asus has limited (some how and some why) each of their Ram slots to 4GB sticks.
Sagers can run 2x4GB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231295 not a bad price if you want future proofing in your laptop. Then later on when ATi releases its next GPU for laptop (5970 or whatever the next revision is) you can slap one in (as long as it is still MXM III) and pop say an i7-940XM in there and be set for another couple years.
I would also guess that if and when you can find it that 16GB DDR3 1333 (2x8GB) would be possible as well since the chipset supports up to 16GB.

I was just checking to see if a memory upgrade meant I'd have to replace the 4GB entirely, or if I could just add on. I've had to pay some other bills recently, reducing how much I have available to spend on a laptop, so my initial spec of 8GB is down to 4GB.
You can actually upgrade the GPU on this laptop? Interesting.
I'm also still deciding between the 8690 and 8760. But overall the portability of the 15.6" screen wins out after seeing some 17" gamer grade laptops in store.

It is such a tough choice >.<

Vertrucio
10-15-2010, 08:06 PM
The major differences between the 8760 and the 8690 is the screen size (17.3" vs. 15.6") and the ability to have 2 hard drive slots, in terms of parts anyway. Otherwise they can both use pretty much the same parts.
After that, you'll have to look at size and weight to make a decision.
After seeing the ASUS G73 in stores, and checking how comparable its size and weight of to the Sager NP8760, I realized that I did not want to be lugging something that large around with me. This is especially so considering I already had a powerful desktop computer that I do most of my work on, and the 8690 I'm buying is for working and playing on the go.
The weight difference between the 8760 and 8690 are close, with the 8690 being slightly lighter depending on the build due to having a smaller frame in general. But, you'd be surprised how little a weight difference can be, yet still be much easier on the shoulders to carry.
So, in general, get the larger 8760 if you plan on using this as a desktop replacement, or mobile desktop primarily. Otherwise the 8690 is there for more mobile, however it's still a large gaming laptop.
Just ordered my 8760-S1 today! Hutsady was awesome throughout the process and answered all of my dumb questions like a pro.
I have to say, these forums are some of the best advertising XoticPC has. I researched for about 2 months before pulling the trigger, and everyone posting, running laptop tests, arguing over video cards, posting reviews, etc really helped in my decision. I was kind of bummed that the ATI 5870 isn't available anymore for any Sager laptops, but I'm sure Nvidia's 460 will work out just fine for me.

I just got mine.
I must say, I truly like the keys on this laptop's keyboard much more than the ones on my girlfriend's G73JW.
And the quality of the screen seems a lot better too.
And I love the simplicity of the design.
On the downside, I find the speakers' volume to be rather low.
Also annoying is that the touchpad does not have an auto-disable feature for whenever one might wish to (read always) use a seperate mouse.
And light-up keys would be awesome, but that's just nitpicking.
Me likes, methinks. :wink2:

for the first one you need to go into the realtek audio manager and turn on loudness equalization and setup the EQ. That will help speaker volume and sound.
For the second at least there is the FN+F1 touchpad disable.

Had one of these machines for five months now. Runs photoshop and secondlife at the same time. Plays every game Ive thrown at it with settings on high. Never had it overheat, but I use a massive notebook cooler that has one big a$$ fan it it. Battery life totally blows, but I didnt buy a i7-820QM with an ATI HD5870 for its battery life. It handles everything rather well. Are there occasional glitches? Yes, Ive had a handle of lock ups here and there. Nothing worse than any other machine ive owned. No complaints with this.
Yeah, pretty much the same experience for me (I've had my Sager for 6 months now). Can't say I have any complaints; it plays any game at settings on high.
Regarding heating, if I have my laptop on a flat surface it gets a bit warm, but nothing terribly serious. Obviously if you leave it on a couch or on your lap for too long it'll overheat. I picked up a $5 laptop cooling mat at Staples, and that alone fixed all of my heat issues. The mat isn't even big enough for the whole laptop, and I'm not sure that the mat's fan does terribly much. But it provides a flat surface to give the laptop's fans an unblocked path to circulate warm air, which is all you need.

I just purchased myself. I've refrained from posting due to the fun (and tribulations) of the new system : ) See specs below.
I personally made the choice to just go with the i7-740, with plans to upgrade in the future. It is a slightly complicated upgrade, but when the new chips come out (in Jan) the old ones will decrease in price over time, eventually making the extreme affordable. To me, that upgrade is worth the wait, why waste the money on a minimal upgrade right now? That is your call though.
Similarly, I felt I don't really have any use for a BR drive right now. Give it a year or more and maybe I'll want one. The price will only go down, I presume. It is an even simpler upgrade, too.
To top it off, I bought my own SSD and installed that (a little better than what Sager offers IMO). It was a pretty simple install process too...not as easy as a BR drive though.
I hope that makes some decisions easier/more informed?

StarTrooper3000-Thanks for the feedback! upgrading laptops is something I am looking forward to learning. So far it has just been ram. It is a power/time until upgrade/$ trade off. Depending on success of folks here would make me consider it. Keep us posted.

I have one of the first 8760's; almost 18 months old now. Funny how things change, tablets weren't even around then.
But I want to be more mobile, I want a second power supply. I can leave the brick this laptop came with at home, and buy a lightweight power supply for mobility.
Specs are:
Model 0227A20120
input 100-240V, 50-60hz, 2.0A
output 20V, 6.0A
though the manual says
dc output 20V, 6A or 18.5V, 6.5A or 19V 6.3A
removable li-polymer battery pack 42.18WH
So if I buy a universal 90W powersupply, I should be good, right?

Since my last post the battery has gone un-useable. It says its at 100 percent charge, but if you try to run it on battery it goes dead in a minute. At $138 for a replacement, I dont see that happening in my near future. Especially for a battery that has no shelf life. As for power supplies, Ive been looking into that. Historically for me anyway, the power supply has been my weakest link, notebook wise. They tend to go at the most inconvenient times and get me scrambling for another one. So Im looking into a pre-emptive strike and pick up a spare. So what would be our best option for a new power supply for this specific unit? Is there something other than the stock unit to choose from?
