Dude, nice rig! $3,000 for a first-off-the-line laptop? What do you do for a living? I'm happy w/my base model +IC Diamond! ;-)

I was just informed by Xoticpc that the IC Diamond compound was NOT added to any G73s and that the option to even do so was removed from the customize page. I was just curious because those lucky few who have recieved their G73s already are saying they have the IC Diamond and if that is the case and you DID recieve it then seeing as I preordered AND paid over a month ago I would demand it. It was a key addon for me.

Interesting. I have not heard anything on my pre-order but I did add IC Diamond as an option. I sent an email to Justin W this morning but haven't heard back. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I just hope I'm getting mine soon and not waiting until March!

Looks like all options are removed, not just the IC Diamond.
I had upgraded to the Artic Silver, and that option is gone now also.
Apparently only stock cooling is an option now.

why do the processor upgrades cost so much for the Asus compared to Sager (Clevo)?

why do the processor upgrades cost so much for the Asus compared to Sager (Clevo)?
Also wondering that.
To go from a 720 to an 820 on the NP8690 only costs $190 compared to $575. :)
The actual retail price of the 820 CPU to purchase is $571. The price of the 720 is $383. A difference of $188, essentially the cost that Sager is charging.
Is the higher cost set by ASUS?

My guess is that Asus has told their vendors that customizations shouldn't be made
to the initial batches of G73's. Frankly, at this point, I don't care as long as I get mine soon. The current laptop is on its last leg and I can't afford to have a gap w/no home computer.

I'm ordering this one: Thermaltake CLN0009 Massive23 ST 23cm Notebook Cooler (Black ) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B002JM1RLS/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance)

any experience with this one Rosewill???

im also worry about high back of g73jh, somting like 5cm and if cooler is to high in the back (like my NZXT also 4-5cm) it gona stand in to big angle
UntilMoraleImproves
02-24-2010, 02:25 PM
I wouldn't personally chose that one exactly because of the angle. I need something flat. The Amazon reviews are rough but the ones on NewEgg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16834991042) for it are better.

I have a question for anyone that has their G73 and have re-installed the stock Windows 7 recovery DVD. Did ASUS give you options to turn off all the bloat ware or did they script it so that all that junk gets thrown on?
My G50 was nice in that all the bloatware was optional so I'm hoping the G73 is as well. I'll be re-installing the OS when the laptop arrives since I have two SSDs to slap into it so I would like to know if the OS installer needs to be hacked up or not.

Guys, I pre-ordered mine on Jan FIRST 2010, and I still don't have it. No contact from XoticPC since the call offering the "A2-upgraded-to-A1", which I declined.
I also requested the Diamond sink compound; are we getting the price for that knocked off the purchase price as quoted? They've already got their $ from PayPal; curious as to how that's gonna play out.
I did opt for a custom graphic, but I'm SERIOUSLY ready to drop that option since it's going to add a week's wait. Can't get permission from the owner of the art, anyway... no reply to emails.

Hey, guys. All's quiet on the northern front; no notification yet. Every day, I check my email every couple of hours, and every time it's the same: nothing yet. Pressure's killing me; I'm probably gonna vapor-lock when the word comes in.
MRPETE, I'm with you ! I've got Left4Dead, DeadSpace, and HaloII stacked up and waiting, but I think I'll be revisiting some of the older games first (the ones that ran on my old PC, but barely.) I'm thinking Half-Life 2, FEAR, CRYSIS, (I'm absolutely ADDICTED to Postal 2: Share the Pain and the Apocalypse Weekend add-on !! Great, mindless fun!!) and a few others (Doom3? Far Cry?)
I'm thinking I'll take my chances with warranty, and upgrade the 'sink compound to IC Diamond on my own... I think it's worth the risk (I've worked with electronics / computers for years & years; if I ain't safe by now....)
I'm delirious about having a TERABYTE onboard; but all the gab about SSD's has got me reconsidering. Too bad I can't afford to snag a 500Gb SSD !
UNTILMORALEIMPROVES: what means those different acronyms you were tossing around about SSD's (one was more affordable than the other....) ??:eeek2:

Keep in mind everyone that the 4th, 23rd, and 30th dates are when the shipments are supposed to arrive at Asus's headquarters. They still have to ship to Xotic PC once they arrive at Asus.
Customers that will be receiving a model from this upcoming shipment will be contacted the later part of next week (10th -12th) or the first part of the following week (15th - 17th).
Additionally if you're in a rush to receive a notebook, we've just recently launched the ATI HD5870 in the Sager np8690 (http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8690-built-clevo-w860cu-custom-gaming-laptop-p-2659.html) and the Sager np8760 (http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8760-built-clevo-w870cu-custom-gaming-laptop-p-2660.html) and these models are currently available and in stock. If you'd like to switch your order to one of these Sager models please email justinw@xoticpc.com for instructions on how to proceed with this replacement order.

I saw this, but you get way less HDD space, half the ram, but it costs more...I think the wait is worth it imo.

Unless he did a CPU upgrade. If he did a CPU upgrade it will be cheaper, even with upgrading the ram to 8GB.

To each his own. Again, if I had the luxury of being without a computer for potentially another month, waiting would have been an option. Insofar as the RAM is concerned, 8GB would have been nice I suppose but for my needs, 4GB will suffice. Hard drive space wasn't an issue, as I was planning on using one of the bays for a solid state drive. Should the other 500 GB HD fill up, I now have an eSATA port for faster transfers to an external drive. PROS and CONS for both and in the end it was a tough decision but I've made peace with the decision.

I've been playing Bad Company 2 since I got everything set up and good to go on it. It runs the game beautifully on nearly max settings. The cooling also works a lot better than you'd think. Playing BFBC2 for 3 hours with all settings max (aside from AA which was set to x2) it was only slightly warm to the touch. The vent on the back was pumping the hot air out amazingly.

I did post it on Amazon too. I just wanted to let people know that Amazon can get them and you do not have to wait months. Isn't this owners forum for everyone? I did not see the "Amazoners not allowed" signage when I joined.
I just checked Amazon's site and it says it's a pre-order to, so it's not guaranteed. And it costs more there. And this is the XoticPC forums, which usually people who post here are people that are ordering from them. Additionally, we've already waited over a month, I doubt most of us are going to order from Amazon since ours is already coming up pretty soon. But thank you for the info.

Second, I and the other guys on this forum purchased our G73 from Xotic. We have stuck with Xotic and believe it was the right choice. I'm tired of morons who bought elsewhere coming in to our forum to brag about getting their machine from somewhere else.

I have a Little bit before I get off work if anyone has any questions about the A-1 I'll try and answer them as best I can.
A few things about it, there is no OS disk supplied with the system, its on a seperate partion from the main drives. To restore the lappy you just hit f9 on boot up and it takes you to special menu.
I didnt like the way the HD's were partitioned so I reformated and made a larger OS partition, then resorted the system using the Asus restore sytem and it kept my new partitions and reinstalled everything just like new, worked perfectly.
You can, and should burn a dvd copy of the restore partition, you need 6 disks, and it takes areally long time to do (been over 2 hours so far) unless I screwed it up we'll see, lol

I saw it in a review somewhere as well or a spec sheet. I'll try and find it again and post the link.

Now that I'm almost the proud owner of a G73JH-A1, I need to go from wired to wireless router.
I wanted to know if you guys have any suggestions for which router seems to be the least troublesome.
I'm planning on a draft-n router. I've been doing some reading and see there are some that are called n+ but I don't know what that means yet or whether it is worth considering.
I did get the upgraded Intel 6200 Pro wireless card, if that makes any difference.
Thanks

Ok first, I'm not sure why everyone upgraded their wireless card? The stock one will transfer just fine. The upgraded one is only good if your network can transfer that fast, which means you need a very fast router and capable network speeds.
On to your question. Honestly, any Linksys/Netgear router that has "n" capabilities should do just fine. Hell even an older one that should work unless you're running a 1.5gb down T1/Fiber Optics line.

I upgraded my card because I didn't know better. Figured that out once I read all the posts in the 'Damnit, where's my computer' thread.

I currently use a Belkin N wireless router and haven't had any issues thus far. I'm also using a Cisco wireless router as a repeater to connect my Blu-Ray and computer to the TV in the living room since neither of those devices have wifi.

Add me to the list of pre-orderers waiting impatiently, I didn't jump on the bandwagon until 3/11. :(
As for wifi and 802.11n, I first tried the Belkin Wireless-N Gaming router that came out...maybe 1-2 years ago? It kept freezing, so I returned it and picked up an Apple Airport Extreme. It's not flashy, but it works great. The latest version is even better.
So it does 802.11n...it has gig-e ports...but it also has a USB port. You can actually plug a USB hub into the port and connect a printer, multiple USB harddrives, or both. I'd definitely buy another.
Lastly, let me add that I'm not using the Airport Extreme as a router any longer. For that I have Untangle running on a dedicated PC as the router, I have kids that use the internet and it has some great content filters (That can be bypassed for grown-ups), spam filters, etc. Anyway, the other reason I did that was for speed. I don't recall if the Airport Extreme was a bottleneck, but my previous Linksys WRT54G simply could not keep up with my internet connection (30mbit/2mbit). The most I could get out of the Linksys was around 12-15mbit. It wasn't until I replaced it that I realized my ISP had bumped up their speeds. (Not talking about speed over wifi but wired)
My vote is for the Airport Extreme. Great device.

Well you can have an "n" router, but you don't have to have an "n" card is what I was saying. The you can get a 108 router and still be fine with the stock card. I guess that's just me.

Hrm, I'm not getting what you're saying? If you get a 108mbit (802.11g w/ speedboost) router/wireless AP then you'll need a compatible card, as far as I know the whole "speedboost" stuff is proprietary. If you have a generic 802.11g wifi card then you'll get up to the standard's speed of 54mbit.
Wireless-N won't change your internet connection speed and since the G73 comes with wireless-N standard regardless of module option then you can take advantage of faster wifi speeds by upgrading your wifi AP to a wireless-N capable model. Older laptops can continue to use their stock wifi cards just fine, so you don't need to upgrade everything in the house when you get an 802.11n router/AP.
Generally 802.11g @ 54mbit realistically does about 9-11mbit/sec, far from what the standard claims. With 802.11n on both ends I get about 45mbit/sec, far from the current 144mbit/sec connection speed.
Based on that, I'd say that typically anyone with more than 10mbit/sec down from their ISP isn't able to take full advantage of that if they're running on 802.11g. Also, if you're doing a lot of file sharing or backups over the network then you'll get a nice performance boost with wireless-N. Prices are cheap enough now that if you're going to upgrade/replace your router then you might as well get something with wireless-N.

I think you're saying better what I was trying to get across. I'm just trying to point out that there's really no need to upgrade the wireless card right now seeing as the stock one will work just fine in MOST cases.

Indeed, I doubt anyone would notice any difference between the standard 802.11n Broadcom (I think it's Broadcom?) card and the Intel 6200 Pro in most cases. I ordered the upgraded wifi card because it was rather inexpensive to do so and I've had better luck with Intel card reliability.
The other bonus with wireless-N is range. If you have spotty coverage with 802.11g then upgrading to 802.11n should help that.

Very true. I may upgrade it myself later on in the future since it doesn't actually affect the warranty, does it? If I recall correctly, only messing with the GPU and CPU will void warranty?

I don't think it will, the WLAN card is accessed by removing the main cover on the bottom, this exposes the memory, both HDDs, and the WLAN card. It's like a 5 minute job tops.

If you purchased an A1 or A2 within the past few weeks it will likely be at least April and maybe up to May before you will get it, this is assuming that shipments from ASUS stay about the same or maybe slightly increased. The only thing that will shorten this time is if ASUS start sending out large shipments for these products very soon.
While talking to Joe last night he said the G73 is THE most popular laptop they have ever seen and they have a ton of orders for it and not a lot of units coming in from ASUS and some shipments from ASUS are being delayed.
Now, understand I'm not an XoticPC employee but I'm basing my information on what sales reps have told me and how this process has gone so far. Which I think it fairly accurate, as I would say its fair to say Xotic has enough G73 pre-orders to go through the next 5+ shipments from ASUS and still not be caught up, and number mentioned to me last night was 3000, but this may have been an exaggeration, but I wouldn't doubt it to be true.
Also you have to understand that only a small percentage of units sold are "stock" and any unit getting modifications have to undergo testing that can last 1-4 days to ensure everything works as intended, on top of the 1-3 days of modification time depending on whats being done.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm not surprised that this is one of their most popular laptops ever. The price for the specs are quite impressing in comparison with other laptops from this very website or from the competition. I've been keeping an eye out on this fine piece of technology for quite some time. Theres no rush at all, I'd rather receive quality than service and a finely tuned laptop than a hastily rushed one that dies on arrival. XoticPC looks like a company that offers quality products and assistance, it looks promising.

Here's a chapter I found on NBR from ASUS. Useful step-by-step instructions if you plan to replace your hard drive or wireless card. Go beyond those pages and you'll probably lose your warranty, but it still might be handy reference in case your laptop starts to get hot and you need to clean it and blow out the dust balls.

This post would be better suited for the tech support thread. My best suggestion is to check and see if the volume is turned up if their is a manual control. Otherwise contact Asus tech support, if you were to pull the laptop apart it would likely void your warranty.

I saw a directory when I first got it titled Cyberlink, so I thought I was good, but apparently that is a Blu-Ray Disc burning suite... The drive doesn't burn blu-ray discs. I think someone might have FUBARed the loaded software.

I've had my laptop for a couple of weeks and overall I'm happy with it. The screen is very nice and crisp. Movies display so clean and snappy. No problems, even when streamed over wireless from netflix.
Overall build and quality seem pretty decent. It is hefty and feels solid. The backlit keyboard is very helpful in low light environment.
My only bitch is that it would not play any of my games. I loaded an old one, Brothers in arms (the first one) and when I was tweaking the in-game video settings for highest everything the screen went black or black with faint white vertical lines. I think I was changing the number of decals or the anti-aliasing. Don't remember. Anyway, I had to force a powerdown and reboot to get it back.
I bought a more recent game (2007) Call of Duty 4 and tried it out. Game play started and then the same black screen and looping sound. The only way out was to force a reboot.
I updated the video and sound drivers from ASUS and still the same problem.
I finally downloaded the most recent ATI drivers from AMD/ATI, dated 3/25/2010 I think and now it is working fine. COD4 is playing nicely but I haven't kicked the settings all the way to max yet. I'm gun shy but it is working very smooth at a slightly less than max settings and resolution.
I'll let you know what happens when push the settings to max.

Thanks for the response. I'm going to look around for the headphones you mentioned, just in case.
I did try uninstalling the RealTek sound drivers, but when using the default windows drivers my headphones weren't recognized when I plugged them in to the headphone jack. Sound still came out of the speakers. If anyone has other suggestions, I'd be happy to try it out. Also, I've read that the Creative software might be the problem but I don't see how to install the RealTek sound driver without the Creative bits. If I run the Creative control panel and try to enable bass boost, it crashes back to the desktop. Guess I'd like to see if the subwoofer is doing anything but I don't know how to tell.
I did have immediate game lockup problems at start of combat until I finally installed the latest sound drivers from ASUS website and the ATI Catalyst 10.3 drivers (didn't install the Catalyst control panel). So far, COD4 and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory are working decently for at least an hour or so. I haven't played for longer than that at one stretch.
Like I said, I haven't maxed the graphics settings for COD4 but I did for Splinter Cell and it worked fine for about an hour this morning. Then things got choppy so I exited the game. Then noticed that I was running on battery and had about 5% left:laugh:. It might run better if I plugged it in!

It'll definately run better if you are plugged in. I'm pretty sure the laptop underclocks itself when on battery so that the battery isn't used up too quickly.

From what i understand that Joe told me, Xotic has been installing the A-1's with Blue ray software prior to them shipping out, but this may have just been for custom orders and might not apply to stock orders.
On mine, I have something called Cyberlink Blu-Ray disc suite. It includes cd/dvd label printing software and Power2Go, a burning suite that will burn BD/DVD/CD etc. I don't have a blue ray disc so I can't tell if I can play it back. Standard DVDs start playing in Windows media player. Don't think I have any specialized DVD player software on the system.

Just a heads up for anyone else that's an idiot like me. The battery won't charge until it drops to 94% or below. If you plug the G73 in, and it has, let's say, 98% battery, it will say "Plugged in, not charging" which might make you think there is something wrong. I looked through the forums and found all kinds of "solutions" , most of which included removing the battery and one of the windows drivers for power management, and it took me DAYS until I realized this is a "feature" (it helps extend battery life by ensuring the battery doesn't overcharge). Hope that helps that one person out there that might stumble onto the same problem.
I wonder how many of G73 owners have problem with HDMI bag (when Windows is starting from StanBy mod):

On the question of Blu-Ray software mine came bundled with AsusDVD8 which plays Blu-Ray and regular DVD on autostart. Also, this computer severely underclocks itself while on the battery, but this is a good thing as it prolongs battery life. It also runs very cool. After playing Crysis completely maxed absent AA the max temps were 55C on the CPU and GPU. Because of this cooling people on NBR are reporting that the GPU is stable at 800/1100 using the AMD GPU Clock Tool. I haven't tried it yet, but I will in the future. I will also be happy to answer any other questions to the best of my ability for those not fortunate enough to have they're lappies yet.
Edit:
Disclaimer: I am in no way advocating overclocking, and never play games while overclocked, that is just asking for trouble.

Interesting.... regular dvd's on my A1 autostart in windows media player. Don't have blu-ray dvd to test. I can't find any other player software on my system. You need a codec to decode the Blu-Ray disk, this codec is not free and would not be included in legit free software. Which means it will not autostart in WMP nor would it play in VLC. The ASUS Blu-Ray software was being installed by Xotic since nothing was included by ASUS in their stock configs.
@Tucker
You can adjust how the CPU and other options perform while on battery with ASUS Power4Gear Hybrid software. You have 4 default choices (Performance, Entertainment, Quiet Office and Battery Saving. Each of these choices has 2 sub options, how it performs while plugged in and how it performs while on battery. I personally have every mode set to max settings while plugged in but in battery mode I have varying degrees of performance. You can change any of the settings within this to suit your needs.
As for the overclocking, I wouldn't suggest anyone try it, especially on a laptop. The heat issue quickly scales and can damage equipment and possibly voiding your warranty. The AMD GPU Tool wouldnt even register the GPU in my G73 and I downloaded it directly from ATI/AMD. I was looking for some software that was new enough to monitor my temps on the GPU and found only 1 that worked, "HW Monitor" from CPUID.

Fingersniffer maybe I got lucky and got the codecs for free because mine autostarts and plays in asusdvd8 which is available for free off of asus website. If you can't read the 5870 I suggest you update your driver to 10.3 or make sure you have the correct version of the and utility. Also, heat on this laptop for a small overclock is not a problem, it still runs cooler than other lappies with the same card, but to each his own. Furthermore, while you can adjust performance settings off the battery you will lose some performance. This is backed up by benchmarking on nbr.

Actually, the codecs are really free. Most, if not all, Bluray implementations use VC1 or AVC/h.264/MPEG-4 codecs. Both are "free" to end users to use. VC1 codec comes with the latest Windows Media Player. It comes with Windows 7. h.264 codecs you can grab on the net, or you can pay for some implementations such as CoreAVC. What may or may not be free is the software that is used to decrypt Blu-ray discs so that the appropriate codec can decompress the video for playback.

Exactly. From what I've read, what costs is the anti-piracy decryption software, not the actual codecs required to process the video.

I was awake for like 30 seconds when I wrote that, I did mean software to say decode and decrypt the Blu-Ray, not codec. Essentially, to play a BD you need a program that can read the information off the disk, and that software isnt free so its usually only seen in pay software or bundled software. like the G73 A1 (well at least should have been included, but ASUS dropped the ball on including it on the laptop or drivers disk.)
I think Joe said some of the later (newer) shipments had it pre-installed/included but don't hold me to that.

Well boys, my first weekend with the G73 is in the bag! So far, I don't have a single negative thing to say about the new rig. The SSD/HDD swap out couldn't have been any easier. The recovery and driver discs worked like a charm and I'm very happy with everything thus far. Somehow I lost my Office discs and their keys so I don't have any Office products installed but other than that, things are pretty much wrapped up.
I've been playing Battlefield 2 and Star Trek Online and both games look great! I couldn't even play STO on my old HP. I haven't noticed any lag and the level of detail is just amazing!
The machine is fast as hell! I used to avoid turning on my HP because it took so long to get it booted and to get to a useable desktop. I ended up using my iPhone for everything because it was so much faster but with the G73, I just turn it on and in less than 30 seconds I have a completely ready to go PC. I uninstalled the ExpressGate software because it takes up a lot of real estate (at least from the perspective of my 80GB SSD) and because I'll frankly never have a need for it.
The sound in the machine is pretty darn good but since I picked up my headset, I pretty much only use that for sound. It makes playing at night much more enjoyable since I can crank it up and not wake up the wife or the kid.
My next step is going to be hooking it up to my 46" LG. I think it will be a bit overwhelming at first but I'm sure I will get used to it.
All in all, I have to say it was definitely worth the wait! Hang tight guys, yours will be here before you know it! It is truly an impressive laptop and built for geeks like us!!

I would stick with a normal monitor, I have hooked my PC's up to my 65in DLP a few times and it looks nice and huge, but then you realize your neck hurts from having to turn your head all the time to look at everything, and you have to sit so far away its kinda silly. Might be decent for watching movies on tho, but if you have a PS3/XBOX 360 it would be easier to use them in conjunction with a program called TVersity to stream it through them to your TV, even HD content.

I should be able to avoid most of the negative aspects just because I wasn't even expecting to try and get any laptop until August/September time.
As is when I did the pre-order I was thinking I probably wouldn't be seeing this machine until June. Sounds like it could be sooner though depending on how much the shipment pace increases with Asus. Nope, mine works fine. If anything the keys are extra sensitive. I am still trying to figure out the layout on it, I've been typing on smaller laptops for so long that I'm having trouble finding certain keys (I didn't take typing classes) But, after I get used to it, I don't think I will ever go back to a regular laptop keyboard.

That won't work, because as he said before, his screen uses a DVI-D connector (i.e. digital only). His monitor does not support outputting analog signals (i.e. DVI-I or DVI-A), so such converters do not work. Besides, even if VGA was supported on a glorious screen like the 3007WFP, it would not do it justice.

This post is really for owners of the stock G73 or owners waiting to get an SSD. As we've all found out, there is no hardware raid on the g73. Win 7 home premium does however support software RAID 0 stripping / spaning (Raid 1 mirror is supported on pro and ultimate versions). Software raid unfortunatly can't be setup on the OS partition, but as I'll show below can be setup very easily between 2 partions on the 2 supplied seagate drives for data.
For my work I use 3dmax, After Effects and also a lot of large photoshop / raw canon 5D files, so setting up a raid DATA partition has really made a big diference and is a huge benefit. Paging file and games are also on the RAID partition. Setup new locations in your libraries for pictures, music etc as you want to keep as much off your OS partition as possible .. My Raid partition is backed up onto a seagate Freeagent usb drive for security. (I personally prefer the sync option to backup files on the freeagent usb software as it instantly mirrors new file to the usb drive without any action but it doesn't support raid partitions yet!!)
I'd love to have an SSD for my OS but am unwilling ,as of yet, to use one as a DATA scratch disk which means if I upgrade I'll lose my RAID 0 DATA disk and i may well be working slower!
This is my disk management setup
http://www.vidauk.co.uk/temp/02.jpg
Heres a good link to a guide (http://www.techimo.com/articles/index.pl?photo=149) .
Basically you just convert both disks to dynamic disks(right click on disk 0/ disk 1 - select convert to dynamic disk)
Right click and Delete all volumes except recovery and OS
Right click on unallocated space and create new stripped volume (NOT SPANNED).:D
Short Stroking - errr hem- see this guide (http://www.techwarelabs.com/seagate_1-5tb-mod/)
For this you need to use Seagates Seatools for DOS (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools). Don't simply delete unwanted volumes from disk management as it won't do shit. Unfortunatly the DOS software doesn't recognise G73 controllers yet so you'll have to remove the drives and short stroke them in an older machine. I haven't tested this but its clear there is alot of benefit if you can do without the space. Ideally I'd want to lose the recovery partition (as its on the fastest part of the disk!!) and try and keep OS at 80gig. Then maybe 40gig + 40gig RAID 0. Short stroking both disks to 120 Gig should speed up thing considerably.:D

I just got this beast of a machine... the A1. Im completely stoked about it, but i have one problem. During my gameplay, when i hit the caps lock or num lock buttons on the keyboard, the game interface goes into a minimized state and it shows this little notification that says "num lock on" or so on. Is there any way to disable these notifications? They are really causing my game some grief. Ive asked other windos 7 owners if this was an OS thing and i dont think it is. I think its a laptop thing? Other than that, i love the machine. Im new to the forum and havent read many post, so i dont know if this issue has come up or not. Any help with disabling this notification would be really great. Thanks all, enjoy those machines!

Has anyone messed around with audio center for optimal settings for onboard speakers? I found these settings below a vast improvement from the presets or using no eq or bass. Try it for yourselves!
Obviously this is not useful to anyone using headphones or other speakers, but may be handy for anyone watching a film on the move etc... The onboard sound from this laptop is the best I've heard.
Audio center EQ settings - (I couldn't find where the presets are saved so these are the settings i used)
31 - 0
62 - -0.1
125 - 2.4
250 - 0
500 - -2.7
1K - -5.5
2K - -2.7
4K - 1
8K - 1.8
16K - -0.1
http://www.vidauk.co.uk/temp/01.jpg
Speaker config - Bass settings
level 3dB
Cutoff 77hz
I also installed shark 007 codecs +x64 add ons which i would recommend. FFd show gives you an easy option to boost volume from dvd's when playing through laptop speakers which is useful. But no Bluray support yet.... Anyone found an alternative for boosting bluray volume?
I cannot get my audio center to come up, and when it does it is just a blank box with a volume slider setting?

Google this Techware Labs article (won't let me link for some reason!)

Looks like short stroking could speed the stock drives quite a bit if you can afford to loose the space. You need to use Seagate Seatools for Dos to short stroke your drives. Don't simply delete unused space in disk manager as it won't do shit!
Unfortunatly Seatools for DOS wont pick up the disk controller in the G73 probably as its a new model so you'll have to remove the drives and short strock them in an older laptop! (from seagate tech support!)

I realized that lately I've been bouncing around to 4 or 5 threads to post info about my G73 and get info from other users which is kind of silly since we have this fancy "owner's lounge".
Anyway, I'm interested in hearing more on how people are using their G73's. I'm pretty much addicted to gaming in 1920x1080 now. I love cranking up the details and other graphics features and have not had any issues thus far except for the time that I tried to max BC2 and didn't realize that the rig wasn't plugged in (not pretty).
So, how do you set-up your games?
Fingersniffer
04-21-2010, 09:48 AM
I always set my games to max settings, max resolution, max effects (AA etc)
If something was not to play smoothly I'll bump down the AA by one notch till it smooths out, or might reduce shaders/shadows.
But usually I buy/build a rig that can support max settings as I love a beautiful picture.
I also like to average 50-60+ FPS in games so I know it will always look smooth during gameplay.

Check out the products by Slappa (www.slappa.com). I bought the Matrix backpack from them a few weeks back (fits 17 inch laptop). It was expensive, but the quality is SUPERB. Absolutely fantastic, probably the best bag/case purchase I've ever made. I don't have my G73 yet but the laptop pocket is collosal, no reason it shouldn't fit.
They also sell laptop sleeves on there, and you can even buy a shoulder strap for the sleeve so you can carry the laptop like a messenger bag. Not sure on the price but I don't think they are too expensive.

You run in turbo-mode (the G73 button) all of the time, right? I wonder how much that actually impacts performance. Have you run temps or FRAPS?
If you watch CPU-Z, the turbo mode adds about 9Mhz from 133Mhz to 142.2Mhz onto the bus speed and your DRAM frequency jumps from 665Mhz to 711Mhz. Overall core speed is judged by the multipliers which we have no control over. (It might be worth mentioning I changed the setting of my turbo boost in the bios from normal to the other option, It think it was turbo?)
It seems to work very well if your not using all threads, but weirdly if you run all cores at 100% in turbo mode (142.2Mhz bus speed) the mulitiplier will jump to x12 with core speed of 1708Mhz. In non turbo (133Mhz bus speed) the multiplier will jump to x13 with a core speed of 1729Mhz meaning non turbo mode for say rendering an image in 3dMax using all 8 cores at 100% is actually very slightly faster than turbo mode! Not what I expected. Core temps also jump about 6'C with turbo mode on at 100% cpu. You can use Prime95 to benchmark your CPU/RAM performance if you don't have multi threaded apps.
It seems to me Intel have designed it to try and keep more or less the same speed at 100% cpu in turbo mode or not. I bet you could get a lot more out of it if we had some control of the multiplier, especially with the excellent cooling in this laptop.
It would be interesting to see some numbers on how Turbo Boost affects gaming?

common issue on ASUS laptops from people trying to hit Fn + F1, which puts it to sleep. I think its being addressed in a bios update in the near future.
my recommendation is use a different method to sleep your computer if you must. like setting the power button to put it to sleep or closing the lid.

I put games and programs that I want to load quickly on my SSD. Other things that I don't care about speed so much I put on the 500GB platter. Most, if not all of my docs and data files go on the platter, not the SSD. Firefox, for example, loads amazingly fast from the SSD. MS Office programs load quickly enough from the 500 GB drive that I don't care to move it to the SSD. Outlook loads and is ready to go in less than 5 seconds from the 500GB.

I use my 500g for backup and for normal program installation and I keep my commonly used games on the SSD.
And the SSD drives do not use the same cheap tech that is found in most of the memory cards, it is similar tech but far more reliable and stable.
And your Raid 0 writes times are better, but not what I would consider a "lot". But then again in the SSD defense it is a single drive doing 2/3's the work as 2 drives which is still impressive. The SSD has double the read speed of your RAID setup which is more important anyway because your PC does a lot more reading than it does writing.
And most "pro" users will have dual SSD's in RAID if they want raw power in read/write times. However, most actual professionals will not worry about read/write times nearly as much as their ability to work faster without any hindrance from CPU/Memory/Video Card bottlenecks. When your working in editing software you do not use the HD very much, your main usage relies on the CPU and Memory, and in newer software the ability to pass some of that workload off to the graphics card.

I totally agree man, SSD's are the way forward and if i wasn't so skint I'd take the leap! Most of the 3d work I do is virtually all cpu / ram based but I often get jobs that require say a development surrounded with trees. The client always wants the best quality hi poly trees. This kind of quality takes you well over 8GB RAM when rendering and is only achieved using vray proxy. You have a lot of disk caching going on there. My system definately feels much quicker working with the RAID 0 setup. My goal with the G73 at the moment is to get the best out of the stock model.
I'd like to go for the same RAID 0 setup i've got but with SSD's eventually. That would kick ass!:D
I personally don't like the way pro laptops are marketed (some want $500 extra for a bluray player!). There is such a hike in price for what is really just the difference of a pro graphics card, which there will probably be a soft mod for in the near future anyway for the G73. It is hands down the most cost effective laptop out their!

This is nothing major, however I doubt anyone really wants to gimp their new laptop with a new BIOS.
This just proves my point about BIOS updates... if it ain't broke... don't fix it!
If you was unlucky enough to have a G73 with the v206 BIOS installed... well you will need to wait for a new version to be released that will correct the issue.

10.4a installed on my desktop perfectly fine, too. I think this might be a PEBKAC error. :P

Is there anyone here that actually successfully installed the new catalyst 10.4a driver???
I have it as well.

Looking at these benchies my raid 0 DATA scratch disk actually writes alot faster than SSD! I guess it depends on what you use your pc for as to whether you would upgrade to SSD yet. If your a pro user then it may well be better to stick to a setup like mine?
RAID 0 and RAID 1 are just plain silly.

I disagree... Maybe RAID1 is silly, but I <3 my RAID0 configuration on my desktop. Super fast, and I've never had any issues in the 5+ years I've been doing RAID0 in my builds.
Heres a benchmark comparison for my C/ OS drive and RAID 0 D/DATA scratch disk.

Can the OS be put in raid rather than in a seperate partition? If not is there any software raid apps that will allow this on the A1? Thanks

I am tempted to try RAID 0 as a partition on my G73, at least until I can afford to get a SSD. I think you need to consider the RAID 0 as "scratch" space, i.e. it is twice as susceptible to loss of data malfunctions.

I am assuming your are talking about the Grey Screen of Death? This is an ATI/AMD issue that should have been resolved in the Catalyst 10.2+ drivers.
The current official version is 10.3 but there is a preview 10.4a driver that is available via the ATI/AMD website.
do NOT do the 10.4 driver!!!!! Ever since I installed it, BC2 takes FOREVER to boot up and load times are nearing 3 minutes for new maps!!!! B4 I installed it BC2 was loading in about 10-20 seconds

RAID 0 and RAID 1 are just plain silly.
It depends on how you use your pc. If for example you just play games and surf the internet yeah its totally silly! When trying to sqweeze as much performance from pro apps the RAID 0 benchmarks speak for themselves whether your using HDD or SSD.
It certainly makes you take BACKUP more seriously though, which is a good thing!

The 10.4a driver has me in maps in about 30 seconds. 10.3 and 10.4 both had long wait times for maps to load.
