Decided it's about time the gx640 got one of these threads!
Mine arrived today, and I was immediately impressed with it. I have one major issue, however. The machine seems to idle at around 70 degrees. I haven't gotten around to installing/running a game yet, but i can't image how hot it will get! It's borderline uncomfortable just typing this. And forget using it in bid. I was idling at 75 off of my desk.
If I can't get these temps under control, I'm going to have to consider a return. Otherwise, great machine! :D

Sorry to hear about the heat issue you are having. I was planning to place my order tomorrow for one of these... I really want something light and portable with enough performance for gaming and thought this was the answer until I read your post. Can you update on how things are since yesterday?
Edit: Just curious what your configuration is, did you upgrade the processor or hard drive?

What CPU are you running?

Could you be more specific on what is idling at 75C? CPU or GPU?
Either one would seem high but would be less of an issue for a GPU as most newer video cards in laptops idle in the 60-65C range.
However, if you CPU is idle at 70-75C that is a problem, even in a laptop with a sub-par cooling layout you should only hit 50-60C idle max (My g73 CPU idles at 43-35C). I would suggest you download a program that can monitor temps and preferably fan speeds (SpeedFan, Everest Ultimate, HWMonitor) and try and make sure your fans are working properly as that would be my first guess as to why you would be idling so hot.
Another thing to note is that you should never set your laptop on a soft surface (couch, bed, leather cushion etc) as it will restrict airflow in your laptop, make sure you have the laptop on a flat stable surface to ensure the issue is not restricted airflow.

Fingersniffer, do you have a program in mind that does that kind of monitoring?
Never mind. I found it. CPUID has a HWMonitor program that provides this data. The same company makes the CPUZ program that gives you system details. www.cpuid.com (http://www.cpuid.com) is the web site to get the software from.

I listed 3 options (2 are free) in my first post, Everest Ultimate is a 3rd pay option.

Solannis: Are you having any heat issues like the original poster mentioned with his laptop? I like the lightweight body, but I am thinking I need to go with a heavier Sager for better heat distribution.

I recently got the GX640 with the 6x blu ray player as an upgrade and I was wondering if anyone knew where I can download the update so I can play Avatar on it. It is the HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW CT21N.

Upgrading the firmware is not the issue. You need to install a patch for your player software. If it is cyberlink you might want to be a bit careful since it might bork up your whole systems ability to play blurays at all. This drive is the same as the one in the G73 (according to the post I read), and a guy over at notebookreview forums installed the Avatar patch and now can't play any blurays on his system.
If you want to take the chance there is a cyberlink power DVD 10 (I assume this is what you are using) patch here (http://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/support/powerdvd/patches_en_US.html)

The only thing is that I was trying to use the pre installed intervideo windvd 8. Is there any free software that plays blu rays that you guys suggest.

At this point from what I can find, no there is no free bluray player software.
You might try going to windvd's webpage and seeing if there is a patch for that version.
