In a desktop? Already out there. In a laptop? Dell is supposed to have it in an Mx17 soon.

Hope DeLL does better than the W90 Asus put out. Also I have issues with notebooks trying to do this. I know just opinion but NB's have a small margin. All games do not take advantage if you gotta cut CF/SLI is the place for thermal considerations. I say cool if you guys wanna go forward but it is counter intuitive if you ask me.
Thermal considerations are front and center. Why make a 12lbs pound puppy an elephant? I mean a small mammal for the largest pachyderm?
DeLL and AlienWare are two groups I would have zero faith in. Does DeLL or Alienware even make notebooks? Yea thought not so I do trust them.
Hi UMI! Where you been?;):D
Edit: I would not wait. First I highly doubt it will go well. 2nd the cost will be extreme.

The new Clevo X7200 is supposed to have it too, I wonder if X8100 would get the MR5870x2.

Cost guys? $1500? Or $3000+? I want my G73 that is enough. If I wanted to spend more could of gotten a Sager.

I was looking at the g73 lol, its going to be a long wait so theres no harm in waiting for the 5870m xfire

True but I think going to be a while. Look up W90 it was CF and had major issues. ATI and Asus could not get together on drivers.

So i heard... u think SLI is better then?

I do not have an opinion on either. But I guess SLI has been done better on notebooks. I just think not sure either is the way to go.

SLI and Crossfire are a waste of money overall. Sure there is performance increases when using it, but nothing even close to double, closer to 10-20% increase max.
It would be better to get a single card, preferably the best one available, less heat, less power and less compatibility issues than running a multi-GPU solution
And yes, I speak from experience, I bought 2 video cards for my newest desktop because I had some spare money to throw at my desktop at the time. Do I feel it was worth it? Not really. Most games don't offer multi-GPU support and even if they "support" it usually it only means that it will work in SLI or CF, it DOES NOT mean that it actually utilizes the extra card.
I think you would be better off by getting a single high power card rather than wasting money for 2 or more, much in the same way it was a huge waste of money to invest in a Quad Core processor a few years ago when 80%+ of all applications couldn't even take advantage of dual core processors.

Yea this is right on the money. IMPO SLI and Xfire were just precursors to the Dual GPU on a single card we are starting to see become more standard like the ATi 5970. The 5970 definately has advantages over the single 5870 and GTX480 and I think that is largely due to having learned from Xfire what the performance gain really is and how to make it all into one nice package. I think that the standard will likely go the way of a single card with dual or more GPU's and probably eventually end up with single die dual GPU's and such in the future.

What will be the next big card after 5870 in Laptops
will we see 5970 in laptops ?
Thanks

It kind of depends on what you mean by the next big card.
If you mean the next to be most powerful then it is the 480M but the problem is between energy requirements and heat, it doesn't really offer enough of a performance boost for a lot of games. In fact the 5870 beats it still in some games. 480M kills in benchmark scores but those aren't realistic representations of what games will actually be using, just meant to take the card to its limits.
If you are talking more along the lines of something that is more mainstream and will be used by plenty of laptops, like the 5870 currently, then unsure right now.

If I had to guess yes the 5970 mobility is probably the next likely step for ATI. Though my guess is that it will be a slightly less capable model to keep heat and power requirements down. I imagine ATI will shoot for a 75W TDP with 2GB of GDDR5 with a 256bit bus. That way they compete with Nvidia, but generate less heat allowing for a more realistic application in the 15" laptop segment.

Know what I could go for? I've heard of some people using a ATI card as their primary graphics card and a weak Nvidia card dedicated for physx. I would go for that kind of thing in the future if the two would get together and make something that would be beneficial for both sides. That would probably be more efficient than 2 full size cards doing both.

I tend to agree with Mav but not sure he or many understand the significance of the bus and speed?
I have posted on this before. Theoretical and clocks are not the same. I take clocks, and if at the expense of theoretical I take clocks. Of course I would like both.

I understand exactly the significance of bus speed vs. bus width. I think that by the time we get a dual GPU mobile card they will have high enough memory clocks on a 256-bit bus to be very advantageous to use.
