I am sure you will be fine for at least 2 years or so... for the most part, software companies will release games that will work on older computers first because that is where most of their customer base is. it is very money driven so why would they isoate themselves to the small minority of people who can afford the latest tech whenever it comes out, now there will always be games that make the tech catch up with them, ie Age of Conan and Crysis when they first came out.
now, prices of upgrades are a whole another thing, some will be driven down as newer tech comes out... i think in the g73, memory wise 8 GB should suffice for a while, and since it is a hassle to change out 2 of the 4 sticks, you are fine. processor and gpu wise, you would have to wait 2 years, unless you want to void your warranty beforehand.
so put it simply, don't panic. you are fine.

Just look at the customization page for Xotic and you can see what can be swapped out.
As far as a statement for a year from now this won't be running new games, I can say that is wrong. Sales wouldn't be nearly as good if this was a laptop that wouldn't be able to handle games a year from now. Now maybe a game or two might come out where you can't run everything at maximum but this laptop should be able to handle most everything with no problems and high settings for the next two years. G73 has some great stats and is on the higher end of the laptop spectrum.

If you can keep a desktop for 8 years you should not have a problem keeping G73 for 4 years.
