Ok, so I'm about to buy my first laptop and I have a lot of questions for you guys!
Here are the basic specs of the two laptops I'm looking at:
NP5793:
WSXGA+
T9500 2.6GHz
8800M GTX
4GB RAM
160GB 7,200 RPM SATA II 300 HD
Li-Ion 8 Cell
Total: ~$2,500
NP9296
WSXGA+
E8400 3.0GHz
8800M GTX
160GB 7,200 RPM SATA II 300 HD
Li-Ion 12 Cell
Total: ~$2,500
Now, for some of my questions!
1. Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 2.6GHz or Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz
2. How big is the difference between WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) Glossy Widescreen and WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Glossy Widescreen
3. What's the difference between SATA/150 and SATA II 3GB/s
4. How much faster will a 7,200 RPM HD drain my battery than a 5,400 RPM HD?
5. Is a ground loop eliminator a good idea for living in a dorm? (or is that just a waste of money?)
ALSO, I read that the 5793 is being replaced by the 5796? What exactly is the 5796 and would I be better off looking into that?
This laptop is going with me to college. I do plan to use it in class, but battery life is more of a factor to me than weight. I do plan on gaming a little bit and was wondering if I'd be able to get a steady 125 FPS in Cod4 with this setup. How big of a difference is there in battery life between the two? Sorry for so much is one post, I'm just knew to this whole laptop scene and I like to know as much as possible about what I'm buying! thanks

1) Depends... Do you want battery life or performance?
2) There isn't much of one (IMHO), the WUXGA is what I have. It really depends on what you plan on doing. For CoD4 either screen resolution should be fine.
3) The difference is the speed of the drive. It is how fast the drive can send and recieve data. SATA/150 means it can send 150GB/s, while SATA-II can handle 300GB/s (or is it Gb/s, I can never remember), but personally I doubt that you will see the difference.
4) For battery life go with the 5,400RPM. The difference in speed in marginal, and you can also get a larger HD that is a 5400RPM for the same price as a smaller 7200RPM drive.
5) ??
For college don't get the 9262. It weighs around 12 pounds and the power transformer weighs two pounds on its own (when my friends saw the power brick we joked that you could kill a man with it.) I'm getting about just over an hour of battery life with my 9262 (2 HD's in it, X6800, 8800mGTX), and you really don't want to try to take out the battery and swap it in the middle of a class. It has 3 screws on it that hold it in place.
I don't know anything about the 5796, but I'll see what I can dig up.

I believe the bigest update for the np579x series is the option of ddr3 ram

In addition to the upgrade option of DDR3 ram, the updated 579x will feature HDMI and e-Sata ports. It will also have the new Intel Montevina processor platform and a few additional items that unfortunately I cannot specify at this time ;)
We will be posting the new Sager/Asus models with full specs tomorrow July 15th at 11:00 am PST after Intel officially announces their new line-up of CPU!!!

NP5796 is what I went with. Its great! Its light enough that I can carry it to class every so often and also works well for desktop replacement. I'm pretty much blown away by the perfection of this monster.

I chose the 5796 over the 9262 as well. It has plenty of power for when in the gaming mood with the settings I configured and has 2 hours battery life while doing some minor work related stuff and websurfing. Perfect for when I want to lounge around the house and carry the laptop around with me as I move.
I have no doubt in my mind that I made the right decision.

I got all the adobe CS3 programs downloaded onto my NP5796 and when I open up Photoshop CS3 or Illustrator CS3 for example its up in no time flat! I can multitask on this beast so smoothly. I'm sure the aluminum cooling pad helps greatly too. Its so quiet I hardly hear the fans.
I haven't brought my lappie to class yet since I would rather not carry it around too much. I have got some comments that its pretty awesome.

Dang it, I was going to get the NP5796 because it was light and thin, but someone told me it was way too loud. Now I'm sitting here wait'n on my NP9262 to get out of phase 2. I can't wait until it gets here !!
Aluminum cooling pad? were did you buy that from?

If you wait a little longer you will be able to get the next 579x with the mobile quad core :) I think the choice is pretty clear then... Mmmmmm NP5796 quad core with 9800 gtx *drool*

the mobile quads are scheduled to be released 4Q 2008 so we will probably see them sometime early next year. some resellers are already taking pre-orders (eurocom, pcmicroworks ect.) so they are not far off. I'll bet the reason xoticpc hasn't advertised them yet is because they usually have a stricter quality control (like the SSD debacle and xoticpc's dodge of that bullet) and will test the limits of the processors before delivering them to there trusting customers.

I have been using my NP5796 a lot in the last couple weeks and it isn't loud in my opinion. I do hear the fans run every so often since my laptop is packed tight with all the fastest hardware. I got my aluminum cooling pad on Amazon. The Notebook Cooler, Silver, ZM-NC2000 is very efficient, quiet, and fits my massive 17" laptop. So I would definitely recommend it. Here' s a link to it notebook cooler (http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-ZM-NC2000-SILVER-Notebook-Cooler/dp/B0012WXFPM/ref=pd_cp_e_2_img?pf_rd_p=413863501&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000JSFT2C&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1N8BDEVAEQMZTJ0M70DH)
It also comes in a smaller size for even less. I believe the silver aluminum really detracts heat very well. It comes in black as well as silver.
Overall I'm really happy with the my laptop. I would've thought the NP9262 to be way louder than the 5796 considering it weighs like 5 more lbs and can have three hard drives, and everything else that goes with it.

I got the 5796 with the 2.8 core 2 duo and I don't think the quad core would be that much better. I also have 4 GB of ram so it makes up for the difference if anything.

but since 9262 uses a desktop quad core and the upcoming processors being mobile quads means there will be some performance differences between them and i believe desktop cpu will win the match BUT since mobility means good performance and also less battery draining so.. im sure there is still some time for mobile quads and i think i'll stick with 9262. or maybe i'm sooooooooo excited about getting 9262 my brain blocks everything against that thought:D

as many have stated before, very few games actually take advantage of the quad cores, so the speed is more important and the dual cores are still faster. you can get a 3.xGHz dual core or a 2.5GHz quad, the dual will run a game better. (mobile or desktop :) )

well im sure it will be fixed with patches bcos in theory quad core should be kickin dual cores butt :P and i dunno that much about which one plays better but lets say e8600 vs q9650. which ones performance would be better in crysis or cod4?

For now :
Intel Core 2 Extreme® Processor x6800; 2.93GHz; FSB1066; 4MB L2; LGA775; 75W
is the Best
& Quad core is next on the list which is hard to understand, but thats what it is :(
