The general question is which graphics card would be more suitable for high performance gaming: Dual 9800M GT SLI or the 9800M GTX.

As I understand it now the Dual 9800M GT would be a touch better than the 9800M GTX, but the price for one 9800M GTX is more appealing. Am I right on this? How much are Dual 9800M GT's better than the 9800M GTX?

I don't know for sure but 9800m gtx looks close to two 9800m gt. so in some games you will be better off with the 9800m gtx.

Yeah, thats what I had originally thought, just looking or confirmation, thanks.

The GTX also has 1gb memory and the SLI configurations are 512MB each (I don't think the memory adds unfortunately - please correct me if I'm wrong).

The 9800M GT DDR3 is really close in comparison to the 8800m GTX performance wise. The 9800m GTX is estimated to be about 20-30% faster than a single 9800M GT DDR3.

View more information on nVidia's website: GeForce 9800M GT (http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_9800m_gt.html) & GeForce 9800M GTX (http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_9800m_gtx.html)

I hope this helps your decision making process easier :)

I end up going with the NP9262 with dual 9800m GT. If the 9800m GTX turn out to be 20 to 30% faster down the road I will upgrade IF possible..

Another thing to keep in mind is that not all games take advantage of the SLI technology. It also depends on the software, not just the hardware for a SLI system

What about higher resolutions? That's where I expect the 9800m GTX to own due to higher ram.

512MB of vram is enough to run most high resolutions as well as 1GB. I suppose if your running an incredibley high resolution screen there would be a significant difference ;).

Most games won`t even benefit from the 1 GB of VRam. It`s not going to be used unless the card proves to be extremely strong.
The GT280 , as strong as it is, cannot use all of its VRam.

The 9800M GT, in all consideration, is the 8800M GTX in terms of performance.
The 9800M GTX , due in 3 weeks, will not provide a huge leap in performance from the 8800MGT/9800M GT but for those going for SLI, if ever available, it might prove to be a better futureproofing choice.
Give us 3 weeks and we`ll see:)

Isn't the ETA for the 9800M GTX 22 August? (that's in two weeks)

Well, 3 weeks was a rough estimate , and at the time of the post, it was 15 days, which counts as almost 3 business weeks :)
Even so, the release date WILL NOT coincide with the shipping date.It will be first released, then tested, then shipped if so.

Old thread lol

Obviously 2 is going to be faster than 1 (for games that can use it), however, I personally would never get an SLi build, for 3 reasons. One being cost vs performance. An extra card is usually over $300 more and performance gains are usually 0-10% in most games, maybe with Crysis something more like 0-40% since those guys at Crytek are always trying new stuff out first. Second being heat. 2 cards is going to generate more heat than the sun, especially 2 9800M cards. 3rd reaosn is battery life. Obviously if you're getting a gaming laptop it isn't your biggest priority, but again, cost vs performance, it's likely to drain your battery significantly faster even when you aren't gaming.

Of course, some people do want that extra 0-40%, so if the above statements don't apply to you, go for the SLi, it WILL be faster than one card, probably by a lot, especially at higher settings.

I've always bought the best cards, but this time I decided to just gowith a step down in SLI.

Why?

I'm a student, and an international buyer; I can't afford a new machine and cant return it. Therefore I have to have something which I know will last....something which I know when one component fails, I have another ready to take it's place until I can fix it. Having two cards was my insureance policy....but they will probably get replaced in two years anyway.
