Is it possible to upgrade from a 8600m gt to a 9600 m gt? Or from a 8600m gt ddr2 to a ddr3 version?

It's possible but VERY VERY hard to do in a laptop if you're just a normal user IE: Not an IT

Actually it really depends on your model and what GPUs it supports. The newer platform for the NP2096 may support the 9600GT, but the older model most likely will not.
