  • Upgradable Graphics Cards

I was looking at the laptops for sale and i saw that some list the video card as user upgradable. Can anyone explain how this works, as most laptops will not allow the GPU to be changed? On a similar note, i have read in forums that the 8600 GS is not quick enough to actually use 512 mb of onboard memory and that 256 is pretty much its max, any thoughts? Thank you.

Hello, Can you please tell me which model you are looking at in regards to the video? The "GS" could run on either 256MB or 512MB of RAM.

      Graphics Cards

The 3680, for example, in the customizable choice, gives a choice of an 8500 or 8600, which i would've interperted to mean the user has a choice to change between the two at purchase. I was curious though, what the '(user-upgradable)' meant on the end. I think i resolved the question for myself, though, thank you for your help. On another set of questions though, I am very interested in Xotic laptops. But, at this time, i am only able to buy most, but not all of the components I want. One of my choices is to go for a slower 5,400 rpm hard drive and i need to know if it is viable to just rip out the slower drive later and replace it. Secondly, i am curious about intel robson flash memory. The article which is linked to on the xotic website claims a 20% reduction in boot time, but i was wondering that xotic would have solid, tangiable times rather than an abstract 20%? The model i am looking at in particular is the IFL 90, is the 8600 gs or gt? Last, what are the real differences between a 32-bit and 64 bit os? Can I run my programs in a 64bit enviroment? Thank you for replying, i am just so astonished to find such wonderful customer service.

Yes you can easily upgrade your HD later when you have the $$$$.

Computer's run/think/talk by using what we call bits 0's and 1's on paper, a 64 bit OS can use 64 bits........pretty much what it sounds like. I prefer 32 right now just b/c I don't run into any problems with it, I'll wait for 64 bit since my 32 just fine. What apps/programs do you run?

          Programs

I run primarily games and will run office 07. My question, i guess, is there any movement to a 64 bit enviroment that will mandate a migration in the next 24 months or any noticable benefits?

heck who knows in 24 months we could be on a 128 bit os, but seriously yes I would guess that with in the next 24 months 64bit os's will be the norm. So if you don't think you'll upgrade before then I would go ahead and get a 64bit os..........prob. vista, I've heard bad things about 64 bit wind xp.

Or if you want a real 64-bit OS that is tried and true, pilfer through the many types of distrobutions of Linux. They are almost ALL capable of running beautifully on 64-bit hardware.

I have a question about the upgradeable video cards in the laptops. Can you upgrade from a 7950GTX to a 8800 card (when they come out)? Or can you only upgrade from say a 8700M GT to a 8800 card? Thanks.

I am sorry there is no info on the 8800 so we can not speculate on if it will work or not.
